I've never seen anyone carry mask defog with them during a dive, i.e., underwater. If there is even a tiny air space in the bottle or tube, it will leak. Besides, how would you reapply it underwater?
I keep my bottle or tube of defog with me on the boat, in my dive bag, like everyone else I've seen. Some boats have a spray bottle of what is probably diluted baby shampoo hanging on a hook.
Spit works fine, but you've got to keep well hydrated. Not that you shouldn't be doing that anyway.
