I've always checked the bulky cheaper stuff (fins, wetsuit) and things that are too heavy or can't be carried (lights, batteries, knives, shears) etc. and checked in the "must haves" and expensive items (computer, BC, reg, mask). However, I just purchased a BP/Wing to replace my vest style BC, and was wondering if I will get any bother trying to carry on a big SS plate? Anyone have a problem with that?

Uh...lights and batteries are just fine on airplanes.

Agreed, I just check them as they are not real expensive but are fairly heavy. I hate having a heavy carry on.

I do as Bouyant1 suggests: reg/computer/camera (all the really expensive stuff) as a carry on in one 21" suitcase. You are allowed 3 pieces of luggage and 1 personal item, such as a backpack or laptop. You can only check 2 bags, the 3rd (containing the reg etc.) you carry on.

That's been my experience too. And definately put your compass in something soft in your checked bag..... I had a problem trying to carry my compass on board Qantas a couple months ago... not sure what the deal is but better safe than sorry.

Have fun & dive safe!

Does anyone know if you can get better insurance on your bags.
