yes. those business journalists. they all write about the truth and nothing but the truth. =)

Interesting to read this regarding nuclear vs coal, from wikipedia. If the Sarangani plant would reach the 900MW power output, it could make nuclear power look good!? pakman might be right about the new critters.

"Coal also contains low levels of uranium, thorium, and other naturally-occurring radioactive isotopes whose release into the environment leads to radioactive contamination. A 1,000 MW coal-burning power plant could release as much as 5.2 tons/year of uranium (containing 74 pounds of uranium-235) and 12.8 tons/year of thorium. The radioactive emission from this coal power plant is 100 times greater than a comparable nuclear power plant with the same electrical output; including processing output, the coal power plant's radiation output is over 3 times greater."

think of all the cool mutated critters you'll have... 3 headed mantis shrimmp... 2 foot long not so pygmy seahorses...:mooner:

oh well, more macro subjects for you guys still.

I grew up in Bradford, Yorkshire, England which was totally dependant on coal to power the hundreds of wool weaving mills in the area! I know that the technology to burn coal has improved a huge amount but the actual coal is still and always will be a dirty substance that when wet, the water that runs off it is black and when dry the dust blows off in the wind of which there is lots in this area! Unfortunatly the people in charge of such projects do not give a rats ar?e for such minor points!

complaining on the coal powered plant would be the fall guy i think.

whne the mutated cool creatures you see comes up, the Coal powered plant would be blamed. little does the world know, that the mutation comes from the Philippine deep, where the drum loads of nuclear waste has been dumped......... the cover up,... war games...... this allows the ships to come close and drop them drum loads and continue with the war games like nothing fell in the deep deep deep philippine sea.

There are other dark clouds in the horizon

There is a public meeting in Maasim to discuss the Coal Power Plant and ask for backing for the issue of an ECC from the DENR so the plant will get the go ahead!
The Coal Plant people are spending a lot of time with local government officials making promisses to the people if they help to push the plant forward!
Things like Sewing Classes for Women, Education for the people and even promissing jobs!
Why does there have to be a reason like a power plant to offer such things to poor people, surley it should happen any way!
Now we here that Toyota Tsusho, the Trading Arm of Toyota Motors is involved with the Plant! Talk about 2 faced, Toyota are talking Green for their cars but promoting the use of coal as a power source!
If it goes ahead, our Sarangani Bay and our great Marine Habitat will be destroyed because of the greed of big business!

The proposed plant will emit lethal toxins that will affect the sea and the land.

Carbon dioxide emissions will increase the PH of rainwater and the sea and threaten coral and fish (carbonic acid dissolves coral skeletons and kills fish eggs).

Mercury will accumulate in longer-living fish; mothers of unborn babies are perticularly at risk.

The reef in this area is pristine and supports incredible reef life and hundreds of local families.

Further, emissions will be carried downwind and contaminate areas where approx. 1,000,000 ( one million ) people live.

The area of the proposed plant is a few hundred meters from the sea shore and lies on land less than 5 meters above sea level.

Not only will a water table and area of salt water/fresh water exchange be affected (contaminants entering the sea), but this area will be submerged if climate change continues; this represents a short-sighted and greedy outlook by some who care more about self-interests rather than environmental protection.

These are facts.

If this construction is allowed, then this sends a clear message to dive tourists around the World that the environment takes second place in the Philippines to big businesses who use money to destroy everything which we hold sacred.

If this goes forward, then expect coal plants in all areas of the PI's where diving in the mainstay of tourism.

Please can we unite to prevent this.

Clean Coal! What a joke, there is no such thing!
