Jeez, I hope the judge throws the entire book at this clown. Take his gear, take his boat, take his truck, and lifetime fishing in California ban would be a good start. Hit someone hard in the wallet, and other people will pay attention.

Although you are not supposed to catch GSB I believe you are supposed to release them once you realize you caught one. I even saw a video telling how to release the fish by submerging it with a pole so it's bladder will compress and it can dive..

Here is another article about the incident:

this is different from the catch and release, they actually speared this one and its quite possible could be the same fish that was caught and released.

No wonder the kelp forest communities are still bereft of big fishes... clowns like this keep killing them. So much for "protected area".

California Diver:
the news was saying a 2000 dollar fine and no jail time..

This is the kind of person & incident that should be made an example of- give him a very stiff $$$ fine, jail time, permanant loss of fishing privileges, take his boat & vehicle away. Harsh, but perhaps it might deter another idiot from killing fish in protected areas.

Brad Mongeau has a device that enables BSB caught on hook and line to be released safely. He offers them for free. Email him for questions.

This is the classic IDIOT fisherman. Does not know one fish from the next, yet he goes out fishing. Bet he does not even have a license. Jail for 6 months, loss of lifetime fishing, loss of scuba gear and baot and $2,000 fine. That should do it.

Leter writing campaign to the DA to throw the book at this clown. Sorry, it the guy has dove more than a week, he knows about Giant Black Sea Bass.

If you don't know what it is, you don't know if it is good to eat, so why kill it?
