A beginner here who is looking to get involved in some scuba diving classes. I've snorkeled the Destin jetties many times but have never scuba dived. I'm always jealous seeing all you scuba divers while I'm on the surface!

I'm going to Destin in May and hope to perhaps make my first real dive after some classes in St. Louis. I'm really looking forward to one day exploring some shipwrecks/planewrecks in the Destin area. I've always loved the city of Destin (have been going there since I've been in diapers), now it is time to explore some of Destin that most people don't get to see!

Welcome to SB! Find a dive center in St. Louis and complete your OW certification so that you can dive in Destin. You can either complete everything in St. Louis or do just the pool work and then check out in Destin. Any dive shop can run through the options with you. Go for it and you won't go back!

Hi BK18,

There are a number of good dive shops here in St. Louis, one of which I am on the staff of--The Dive Shop of St. Louis.
PM me with your location in the area and I will let you know if there are any dive shops closer to where you live and/or work. The Dive Shop is the best (I'm biased, of course). www.thediveshop.com

You can do your classroom and pool sessions right here in town in a weekend or on a number of evenings. You can do the open water dives in another weekend at one of our nearby watering holes: Table Rock Lake-Branson MO, Mermet Springs-Metropolis IL, Quail Run Quarry-Rolla MO, or one of a couple other choices, mostly based on which dive shop you learn from.

I would strongly advise you to do the whole class here in St. Louis so you can concentrate on having fun and enjoying your dives when you get to Destin. Otherwise your first 4 dives in Destin will be kneeling in the sand and clearing your mask, along with other fascinating tasks to finish the certification instead of making actual fun dives!
