Before marriage, I stayed in $6/night places. Since marriage, I'm not allowed to stay in cheap **** holes anymore. Last place I stayed in was $85/night plus tax. However, I did take my bigassed backpack to haul some of our stuff in.

Yeah my partner likes to upgrade a bit too. Guess I'm one of those rare gals that perfers the "authentic"
experience :D!

Humm maybe the backpackers are hanging out over on the LP Thorntree?

"Diving" and "budget" should not be used in the same sentence....:)

I second the recommendation for airasia.com... Buses can be more fun though in Asia. But avoid the Siem Reap - Bangkok one. That is the worse bus ever...

Air Asia only allows one bag to be checked as I recall though.

Semporna, Borneo for diving in Sipidan and surrounding islands - I don't remember the costs but its a small fishing town so if you stay there and not on one of the expensive resorts on Mabul or Kapali be aware that there isn't alot going on for tourists, but the diving makes up for it.

And fresh mango's from the market (buy first thing) are great for surface intervals (just remember your knife) :)

Personally I'm a budget traveller because I love the freedom backpacking can give you if you have the time and the inclination rather than "package holidays" offerings of a country, which doesn't mean I'm opposed to a spot of luxury now and then!

Having recently sneaked a peak at the dollar amount of my purchase history at my LDS, I conclude that I am not a budget diver. But at least now I know why they're so happy to see me when I come in.

I totally agree & I absolutely loved diving at Sipidan! I think scuba junkies home stay on Mablu was about $18 a night! And dives, I believe, were something like $30 each. Not bad for such an amazing site!!!!!

And I do miss the fresh mangos & papayas!
