I hate to say this, but in the absence of some better reasoning, they could just have been being jerks. ok, they might have been trying to stir things up to practice black water navigation or something. But maybe they were just silting things up on purpose for others 'cause they thought it'd be funny.
Last weekend, some folks tried to move a strobe and weightbelt that our Rescue class instructor had placed somewhere as part of underwater search/recovery training. (Yes, they knew what they were doing. Yes, they thought they were being funny.) Luckily, our instructor caught this. (Otherwise, we would have been searching for a loooooonnnnng time!!!)
