importance of long back plates for tall people?

I think I've been trying to wear the plate too high on my back. I'm going to try this again starting with the waist belt placement and adjusting the shoulder straps from there.
 
I'm only 5'11" and have a DSS long plate. At times, I wondered if it was too large. I recently got my hands on a standard sized plate and it's not nearly as comfortable as the long plate. The standard length plate cumber band digs into my back in a weird way, where it weaves through the plate.
