I dive independent doubles because I have two steel tanks that I use as single in recreational diving. In extended range or cave diving I just put them together. In here I don't have the chance to rent manifold doubles, so I must dive that way.
I do recognize the advantages (already mentioned here) of manifold doubles tough, but I can't afford to buy two more tanks now.
Switching regs is just a matter of habit - you get so used that it becomes instinctive.
