LioKai:
Are you a member of KUPS? (Kona Underwater Photographic Society)

Not yet -- I've been after my wife Vicky to join. She's actually the underwater
photographer in the family. Me? I'm just the safety diver hovering above her,
reminding her to check her SPG every now and then

She shot some photos in the Kona Classic this year - took first
prizes for best macro (Green Lionfish near the Naked Lady)
and best reef shot (South Golden Arches ).

LioKai:
I am giving a video presentation in late July for KUPS. THe video is on fish behaviors.
(mating, feeding, cleaning, hunting, etc) IT is a the final product of 2 years of shooting video.

Ah - most cool - we will definitely come check it out! It looks like the meeting is on
28 July (according to www.kups.org).

Vicky and I are in southern California thru the weekend - back to Kona on monday night.
Will give you a call next week sometime.

We're also heading to Oahu over the 4th of July weekend to do some wreck diving
with some friends of ours. Should be fun - I'm looking forward to seeing the Corsair
in particular...

Cool shots.

July 28th, well now I know the date of the event. Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know until now. Some of the video that I will be showing is a Barber's (green) Lionfish stalking and attacking prey. I had to slow down the video near 800%, and the attack is STILL faster than I could believe.

gkndivebum:
Mauna Kea is very photogenic, especially in the winter.

My wife took the first one, looking towards Mauna Loa from near the summit of
Mauna Kea.

The second one I took; my wife is on the right and our friend Dalia is on the left.
Those are the Keck telescopes in the background (perhaps the finest optical
instruments on the planet), with Haleakala (Maui) visible in the background.

When I lived in Hawaii (many, many years ago) and would go to the Big Island to play army for a month each year, there was a saying that EVERYONE should climb Mauna Kea once...but only a fool climbs it twice! We used to climb up to the snow line from the military base in the 'saddle' between the volcanoes. Tough climbing, even for a 21 year old army troop in good condition, would be impossible for me today I fear.

Thanks for the great photos! It brings back a FLOOD of memories for me....

Pedge:
Where is South Golden Arches?

I think you mean Golden Arches, South mooring.
Golden Arches has more than one mooring.

Incase you mean "where" on a more grand scale, Golden Arches is located north of the Pine Trees surf spot.

Very grand scale: Kona, Big Island.

All this talk of Mauna Kea in the snow reminded me of this shot. And it only took me one hour to find it again.

Guess what Maui, Silver Swords are found on Mauna Kea too.

Justleesa,

Jeez, don't you sleep? 2:30am

justleesa:
I usually pass out at 8PM...lol

That's referred to as "Kona Bed Time" around our house

We're lucky if we make it all the way to 9:00pm. House guests from the mainland are
usually surprised at first, but fall into line pretty quickly.
