On jacket style BC's, they mainly are used to hold the backplate in the jacket to the person wearing the BC. The clip over the cumberbun (sp?) holds the "ventral" air cell in place.

I mean, what do they do that the waist strap doesn't do. (besides constrict your diaphram)

since they are usually made with some elastic, they compensate for depth a little better than just webbing... Or at least, that's the idea...

It makes it a lot more comfortable. It keeps that strap from cutting into your guts. Padding for the stomach. Mine even has a pocket in it.

Why do you think a strap would cut into your guts? Straps are your friends. Its cumberbuns that are evil, bad things.

If it is cutting into your diaphragm you are wearing it too high.

Why are there cumberbuns? They're creepy.

Um, first of all, they're "cummerbunds" (or, rarely, cumberbunds.)

They serve to cover the otherwise odd gap between the end of the shirtfront detail and the waistband of the trousers, and provide an appropriate aesthetic analog to a belt.

If you have a decently made one, it has a very small pocket sufficient for the theater tickets and the car valet claim stub, since you should not be carrying these things (or anything) in your trouser pockets. This is very handy. (If carefully fitted for it, you can get away with putting these things in the inside jacket pockets, but these are awkward to fish around in; the cummerbund pocket is superior for this use.)

Please
- make sure it matches your bow tie.
- choose tasteful colors.
- wear it the right way up (folds go _up_, not down.)
- learn to tie the tie.

Couldn't agree more. Look so much better when both tied, and at the end of an evening, untied.

I'm glad your response wasn't serious, since judging by the responses on this thread from evad, he/she is either (1) very young or (2) just looking to increase the post count numbers...

"Straps are your friends"
"cumberbuns[SIC] ... are evil bad things"
"They're creepy"
Huh? Is this a joke?
