OK, I've dived with the atom four dives so far. The jury is still out. It hasn't wow'd me, but it certainly doesn't suck either. I need to work with it a little.

My first problem was that it was not telling me that I had a link to the xmitter on the surface when it was connected to a pressurized tank. The only way I could tell was to do the battery check ('S' button for 5 seconds) which tells me the status and the pressure if link is connected. It showed the link once it got wet. That's a bad thing if you ask me.

I have to work with the alarms because the thing just kept going off for low air condition as I neared the end of the dive. I wasn't too low, but I guess I was hoovering a bit, so maybe it knew best.

Checking your pressure, while not hard because it's one button press away, can be a pain if you lose link with xmitter as I seemed to do. This is probably more due to the location of the xmitter on the right side of the reg and me wearing the atom on my left wrist. I plan on moving the xmitter, but the threads are different on the left side (silly zeagle).

Other than that, no "problems." I will probably set it to the conservative mode. I dove with someone with a suunto, and while they showed 35mins NDL for the next dive, I had 59mins. Granted, we were never perfectly together, but that's quite a difference.

Unfortunately, my DT+ took a crap before the first dive. I turned it on and it read "too high". It then just turns off. I have changed the batteries (although that one was knew). I have taken out the batteries overnight. I have tried anything I can think of and it still just says "too high" when turned on. So, the whole reason for getting the atom as a primary with the DT+ as a backup reading off of the same xmitter went out the window before I ever got the chance to make it happen. Bummer.

I think I just have bad Atom Karma, or something...

Used the Atom for 16 more dives in Layang Layang - the computer and transmitter worked flawlessly. Anyway, I get on a plane to fly back to Sabah (Malaysian state in Borneo) and about five minutes before landing, my Atom went into dive mode, showing a depth of 2.7m!! After the plane landed at Kota Kinabalu airport, the Atom was still in dive mode, timing the dive and still showing a depth of 2.7m. After about fifteen minutes of this, I decided to take the battery out, waited five minutes and put it back in. The Atom then reverted to watch mode and is now functioning normally (as far as I can tell - I have not dived with it again) with the memory/dive history not affected.

Very strange...

I purchased an Atom last Friday night before a dive on Saturday. I used in on 2 dives and was very impressed with it, although I had a concern with the screen. I didn't really notice while diving, but while on land if viewed straight on, it basically dissapeared. I had to tilt it to see the LCD. I don't know if this is an a feature for diving so you don't have to turn your arm to see it and can just view at an angle.

Anyway, I pulled it out Sunday night to review the logs. I put in on my wrist and before I had a chance to press any buttons I heard a beep. Once I realized what was beeping I looked down to see it had reset itself with time and date back to start.

I checked battery status and it said okay. Battery was packed new and put in on Friday night. I packed it all up in the box to return it. A few hours later I checked on it again. I took it out of the box, again pressing no buttons, and heard it beep and reset. This time the battery said low. I opened the case to check for any signs of water intrusion, and it was dry. Reinstalled battery and the unit went dead.

May have just been a defective unit or even a defective battery, but I just lost confidence in the computer. I ended up returning it and getting my wife and I Pro Plus 2 computers.

I like the large screen and additional information you get on these. Very simple interface with lots of info.

In the end I thought the Atom was "cool" but wasn't totally confident in it's build quality. I feel much better with the Pro Plus 2s. If I ever go with a "watch" style computer I will probably choose a Suunto. I own a few of their products and feel their build quality is much better. I like they fast they use a real crystal on their face and not just plastic that will easily scratch.

I will say that the Atom software, while not very good, is much better than the Oceanlog software for the Pro Plus 2. I hope they move these and other computers over to the newer software soon, but who knows if this will ever happen. In the mean time I purchased Scubase.

usually a problem when wearing polarized sun glasses. Not an oceanic problem so much as an LCD problem... unless is was left out in the direct sunlight and heat for a period of time, then LCD's tend to turn black and can't be viewed even on an angle.

Uh, that sucks rocks. I'd be fairly upset.

Can't blame you for wanting the suunto. I am considering a possible switch to a D9 if I have any problems with my atom.

Just to clarify what I was saying abou the LCD screen:

On my Atom if viewing the LCD straight on indoor or out, you could not read the screen at all, you had to tilt it away about 30 to 45 degrees to be able to read it. I thought this might be an effect of the magnifier/protector, but I removed it and this was still the case. I did not have on sunglasses and am aware that that can affect an LCD.

I am curious to know from other Atom users if they can view their screens when looking at it straight on out of the water, or if they have to turn their wrisits a little to view it.

Atom was brand new and never left in direct sunlight. I think I may have just had a poor screen in mine in addtion to the other issues mentioned above.

I am really looking forward to diving the Pro Plus 2 computers I got instead of the Atom. I think it will be nice to have so much information available at one time on a nice large screen.

I can view the screen of my Atom when looking at it straight on out of the water, with or without the screen protector.

OK

So I had the fast battery depletion issue last month. Oceanic Japan sent me out tow batteries for free ASAP. Nice service, much appreciated.

Now last week, my backlight quit working...

Hi, Mine was exactly the same from new; I sent it back to Oceanic who said it was fine. BUT, getting ready to start diving again this year (it's cold!) I noticed that the low battery warning was showing; I replaced the battery three times each with a brand new battery and each time I got the low battery warning so I sent it back to Oceanic who replaced it and sent it back within two days (now that's service) and the screen on the new one is as dark as you'd expect an LCD watch to be.
Send it back, it's not right. My new one was manufacturered 09/04 whereas my first one was 08/04.
