"Spear fishing is selective fishing"
Wish I had said that but I didn't-- the credit belongs to Sam Ichikawa.

Many moons ago I was an avid spear fisherman hunting off the beaches of Orange county, California. Fish, lobsters, abalone, scallops, pismo clams, oysters, uni, and kelp to make candy was harvested and consumed. With in the last 25 years most of the game has been reduced in size and quanity or has totally disappeared do to over harvesting and water polution.

I would need to be on the verge of starvation to even consider consuming any sea food harvested from the Orange county shores. Yet I still spear fish from isolated beaches in Baja--but it is selective fishing generally for immediate consumption.
