long trips, heavier boats, much shorter season I think all have to do with it. Considering I spend at least a $100 every time I walk in the dive shop (which is much more frequent than I go out on the boats), I don't sweat the boat fee too much.

As far as NJ being so expensive to live in, it's all relative. I'm glad to be back.
 
Just to beat the horse a little more: (can only speak for Long Island) Boat ride is minimum of 1.5 hours usually more like 2 + hours. A two tank dive is an all day commitment.
In Florida all the trips I have been on have boat ride of less than a half hour to the dive site. The boats make two trips a day. Since I am a tourist in FL, that means renting tanks. So the half day two tank dive costs more than the full day at home.
