Hi, my husband and I and our 10 month old are travelling in Malaysia mid February - early March. I am interested in doing some diving while there but we also just want to chill out on some beaches and maybe check out the rainforest or do some hiking as well. We will be in Malaysia for approximately 2.5 weeks. We are planning on ending our trip in Sipadan for a few days so I can dive but are unsure where to go before. We land in KL around Chinese new year and will stay there for a few days. So what am I looking for help with is the following:
1. I haven't gone diving since Nov 2012 when I was in the Philippines - where would be a good place for me to get back into it before heading to Sipadan? That also has nice beaches and decent accomodation? Particularly given the fact that it will still be monsoon season on the east side of Malaysia. We have looked at Langkawi but I'm not sure that there is enough to do on the island for a week without getting too bored.
2. are there still security issues in Sipadan/Mabul?
3. Any suggestions for dive shops/accomodation on Mabul? We definitely want to stay somewhere decent but not too expensive as my husband doesn't dive and will basically be hanging out on the boat with our child while I am diving.
Thanks in advance for your help!
