Try buying a car (that’s not a Tesla) in the US without a dealer. Talk about useless rip-off vestige with oligopolistic power.

I guess its really difficult to get a Tesla in TX because of their dealer laws. You wouldn't think that in TX.

But for a somewhat socialist country like MX, Taxi driver is a ticket to the middle class.

Of course a I wouldnt wonder a few rich people wouldnt start a fleet of ubers?

While that may be a true statement the fact that the supply is artificially restricted lends itself to corruption. I have heard many references over the years that individuals at the top of the taxi union own large numbers of medallions that they then sublet their individual fleets of cabs to others in a basic slave labor scheme. Perhaps if an individual was limited to a single medallion the system would not be a corruption magnet.

Uber and other ride sharing models undercuts this system. I believe the NYC medallions peaked in value $1M USD in 2014, when Uber came to be the value plummeted to currently below $150K. I seem to remember that this was how Roger Stone loss his a$$ (financially) from speculating in medallions.

I haven't heard of any Uber activity on the island yet, but March is a long time ahead so things could change. Check again in 2024.

Car rentals are seldom needed and include extra responsibilities and extra risks so I avoid them. I might rent one to drive around the island including the wild side one day, being very careful to leave nothing in the car when I get out, not lose the keys, not drink a bit of alcohol, not have a wreck, and not get stopped by a cop. Shared vans are easy to book at the airport to any hotel, and taxis are easy to find altho some drivers will charge more than the approved rates. I will confirm the rate before boarding, I will dicker if the rate sounds high, and I carry small bills in Pesos.

I would not count on Uber being on Cozumel any time soon, but I don't see why this would be an issue for your plans. There are always taxis.

Its coming. Slowly rolling out throughout the state. We use UBER sometimes in Cancun to pick up clients. Works awesome for us and brings down our transport costs immensely.

I dont know costs. I can give you example, we paid $60 usd to take clients by taxi to hotel zone in Cancun from Punta Sam. One of our clients took UBER from Punta Sam to near the Cancun airport which is farther and paid 250 pesos ( $14). Other clients have taken from Punta Sam to downtown area for about $5 usd.

It wouldn't make much economic difference for me; I fly direct to Cozumel and use taxis to get around. Taxis on the island are not a significant factor in my overall expenditure for the trip.

If Uber comes to the island I sincerely hope that Uber and the taxi union come to an amiable way to coexist as the taxis and Uber did in Warsaw (see post # 121). If Uber comes to the island and starts muscling taxi drivers out of their jobs, I will continue to support the taxis.
