Chiara - although it should have been the DM's problem to solve, I reckon you done the right thing. The buddy should have been banned and the newby re-educated.

I have been on chaotic cattle boat dives and I reckon the two most important factors in whether or not a dive is a good one are the DM and how lucky you are when it comes to buddy allocation.
 
BTW

I just had a look at the sea signs site and it reminded me of a DM who spent 10 minutes going through his signs for the days dive, including quite a few of the ones on the web site you posted. It took now time to learn and made for a enjoyable set of dives.
