I made three solo dives in the Monterey area around Xmas time. I travel to this area to visit my mom over the holiday and thus don't have regular dive buddies to contact.

The first dive was along the breakwater at San Carlos beach just after 8:00 in the morning. This area is popular for classes, and there were two groups still gathering as I entered the water. The breakwater is a nice easy dive with a max depth of about 35 ft. I like to poke along the bottom on the way out, then come up about 12 ft shallower for the swim back. The only thing to be aware of is the occasional fishing line. I did cut a line on the way back, but mostly for convenience.

I chatted with a few divers once I was out of the water. No one even mentioned the fact that I was diving solo. As I was passing the time, the surf got higher, and the beach entry for the next dive I had planned to the Metridium Fields, looked a bit hairy, so I bailed and enjoyed the rest of the morning just poking around Cannery Row.

I was a customer on Dolphin Scuba's live-aboard trip on dive vessel Vision in the Northern Channel Islands. We spent three days at the Islands--February 20th through February 22nd, 2015.

I solo dived the front side of Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands. On some dives I was within close proximity to some of my fellow divers and on some dives I was completely separated from my fellow voyagers.

Wind and seas: non existent!
Swells: no swell, just an occasional lump.
SST: 59 F.
Vis: 80 feet plus

We dived different terrain which ranged from a flat bottom with parallel ledges to wall dives. My deepest dive was 113 fsw.

Many of us hunted for lobster, scallops, and finfish. Some just took pictures.

Our most experienced hunter took 19 bugs. Two of them were between 8-10 pounds.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip, the divers, the crew of Vision, Erica's non-stop great food, and the diving!

Thanks,

markm

Yamagiri Maru, Chuuk, last solo dive. Great dive loved it...

Hodgeclose, Cumbria, UK. A flooded quarry, with a tunnel at 25m. Tunnel goes back approx 200m

I did four solo dives this week-end ... two in Hood Canal and two more at my local mudhole.

My Hood Canal dives were both planned deco dives ... to 150 and 120 fsw, respectively ... using 25/25 and EAN50 deco mix. The first dive was to look for a deep wall I'd heard about. Didn't find it, but know now where not to look next time. The second dive was to go find some cloud sponges I'd been to previously ... and it was a bit more successful. First dive was for 73 minutes, second for 68.

My local dives were very familiar to me ... I've done the same profile dozens of times ... perhaps even more than 100 times. And it never gets tiring. I did it the second time because I found a juvenile wolf eel on the first dive, but my camera had the wrong lens and one of my strobes wasn't working, so my pics weren't to my liking. So I went back with a different lens and two working strobes, and unfortunately the little wolfie was gone. Nice dive anyhow. Both of those dives were in the vicinity of 90 fsw max, with roughly an hour-long bottom time.

The USS Oriskany. Swam around the flight deck, the stern, and swam in a few corridors. Water was 68F where I was. Saw a shark (nurse I think) and the barracuda were curious and menacing. 45 minutes of bottom time, 62 minutes of deco. And missed the storm that blew over the boat and the rest of the divers while hanging off my jonline.

I just finished 20 solo dives over 8 days in Boynton Beach, FL and returned home to Basel, Switzerland. Three dives on the Castor, a dive on the Capt Tony, and 16 reef drifts in Boynton and Delray. One Bull Shark, 1 Lemon Shark, many Nurse sharks, Southern and Yellow Rays, Green, Spotted and Goldentail Morays, lobster, Goliath Grouper and all the usual reef fish. A few more unusual things for this area, several Queen Triggerfish and a couple Flying Gurnards on the outside of the reef in Delray. Another group saw a large Great Hammerhead in Boynton, I missed it, can't see everything, but it sure is fun to try. Fantastic dives and the water was up to 82 degrees, great to be back in my 3 mm after a cold Winter and early Spring.

...and, I forgot to mention the several Hawksbill and many, many Loggerhead turtles

I enjoyed a solo dive on the newly sunken articulate reef, the Annapolis, just outside of Horseshoe Bay in British Columbia last weekend. I started with two buddies, both in single tanks, who ended the dive and ascended together after about 28 minutes. Since I was wearing double 100s, I enjoyed another 30 minutes on my own.
The ship was a pleasure to survey. I did a swim through from one side to the other, and a limited penetration through a couple compartments. The area under the stern around the prop shafts was fun to poke around as well. Max depth was 105 fsw on the sea floor. The interior was thoroughly cleaned before she was sunk, and there was only a light accumulation of silt. The structure, however, was already home to schools of small fish. It will be interesting to see how the marine life accumulates over the next few years.

Well, almost all of my dives dating back to 1962 have been solo but the latest was yesterday at the Casino Point Dive Park. If you count same ocean same day divers, there were a hundred or more.
