I don't dive stages. Nobody I dive with dives stages.

I love it on the left hip because I can sidle up to it during the dive and always know my buddy's gas. And vice versa. Of the things I NEED to know during the dive, knowing my buddy's gas is probably 3 on the list. Maybe 2.

Its that important to me to know their gas throughout the dive.

If I need to know my buddy's gas I just ask (signal: right index and middle finger on the palm of my left hand). But most of the time my buddy tells me regularly so I know...

Gee I had to double check the forum here.......with the answers being given I was sure it wasn't the DIR forum.....I think it has been invaded.

It's a sad day for the men in black.

My apologies to those in the forum. I forget myself. My response was not a troll, merely a suggestion.

This is the DIR forum and my response was not in line with that way of diving.

I'm punching out.....

FLTEKDIVER:
Ok, one question, I can't seem to find a reasonable answere on the web, that address DIR hose configuration's, which I have the Single Tank Hose Kit:

Primary hose: 5'
Secondary hose: 22"
SPG hose: 24"

I know DIR recommend's the D ring on the left hip on the 2" webbing.

Either the D-ring has to be about 6" off center, about mid way from the crotch strap to the BP, because when i'm trimmed out, and frog kicking, it feels like I have to REALLY bend my neck down to see back to my lower left hip to read the SPG.

One question I have, I have been diving it on my upper chest D-Ring for years, comming under my left arm,and clipping it off. I love my set up I just bought, love the way everything trimmed out this past weekend, but hate the SPG on the lower left hip.

Talking with somone this past weekend that was diving the same configuration, they said the " proper " DIR way is to un-clip the SPG, bring it up, check your PSI, then re-clip.

I know If I drag the SPG back under my left arm to my chest D-ring, then I have a hose now running underneath, vs streamlined along the BP, which I can see the only reason for it being there, or I'm just clipping it off to far back.

Any comments would be appreciated.
I was taught to consider the SPG as a backup for my brain. So how many times do I need to look at it anyway? Really, I should just use the SPG to confirm what I already know without looking. Having it clipped some place where I can stare at it all the time is counter-productive to learning to use my brain first, and my SPG as confirmation.

Agreed Rick. I reference it maybe twice in any given dive, more or less. As you said it's simply a back-up and only will confirm, or not, what and where you should be in your dive.

I also know my buddies consumption, which happens to be identical to mine. Makes that real easy too.

I check when it's convenient and I have time to do so, but you really don't need to unless there's a very real reason. The checks, double checks and more pre-checks prior to the dive are sufficient IMO.

It's tucked back there, out of the way, and does not clutter the chest D-rings needlessly.

But why break stride and inturrupt the groove of the dive when you don't have to?

My point is this: Sometimes a glance is all it takes to deliver the peace-of-mind knowledge that would otherwise require a stop, signal buddy, buddy acknowledges signal, buddy reaches around, buddy unclips SPG, Buddy reads SPG, Buddy processes pressure, buddy signs the number to me (unless not my regular buddy, in which case I demand to see SPG), I process the number, I confirm the number back to buddy, buddy reachs around, buddy re-clips, we both move on...

Sometimes the dive is too amazing to go through those acrobatics. I sidle up, look over, get back in the groove. Much nicer, less invasive, delivers the same result to me.

When I first started diving my BP/W with Uncle Pug, he'd never ask for my gas pressure. But every time I checked my gas, my gage would be turned facing away from my body.

Very irritating.

I used to hack off Claudette the same way... I now turn it back.

Usually.

Depends if she's gonna make me do OOA drills with her damn SeaCure.

One day she got so mad when I forgot to turn it back that not only did she throw a planned OOA drill at me, but I had to do the escort... breathing on her evil SeaCure for an extended time...

Witch.
