that is what I was told in my traning but I did alot of research and found out thru rodales that you really only need a snorkel if you are going to do a shore dive with a swim, so what I am going to do is take the snorkel off my mask when I dive :D

Good idea. I never use my snorkel. I despise snorkeling and will strap on a tank even at shallow depths such at 10'. I really can't think of a reason to carry a snorkel.

snorkles are good if you are teaching/helping with classes especailly in the pool. But for boat dives, I don't use one at all:D =-) :D

Sure I do:

1. For snorkeling or my pathetic attempts at free diving.

2. As a prop to keep the door open when I'm moving gear.

3. When assisting at open water classes, where it is required, if for no other reason than to demonstrate its utter and complete lack of utility.

4. To dig in the sand while looking for artifacts.

Seriously, I don't find it useful for the dives I do. Even when shore diving, I float on my back, so I don't need it.

In addition, it interferes with the deployment of my primary hose (which is a 7' hose routed across my chest and around the back of my neck) during out of air drills.

Finally, it is a potential source of entanglement in overhead environments.

Do You Use a Snorkel Poll

Later

I've always used a snorkel. I was freediving that got me into SCUBA. I often snorkel with my wife (who can not scuba) and freedive to the reef. It's fun to freedive past the scuba divers who think they are deep at 30 ft.

On the surface I will use the snorkel while waiting for my buddy get in the water. With any chop, the snorkel is a few inches higher up, and keeps water out of your mouth. Also, my reg makes a loud noise when out of the water.

just kind of getting back into diving after a lot of years when I didn't dive, and I'm a TERRIBLE AIR HOG. One of my favorite things to do, to calm down is to be the first off the boat, air up my BC a bit, put my snorkle in and hang face down on the line, waiting for everyone else to get geared up and into the water to dive. This saves the air in my tank for the actual dive, calms me down to reduce the amount of air I'm using and is the way I have ALWAYS done it. So for those reasons, I'll keep my snorkle hanging on my mask strap.

That poll was good. I'm all for using a snorkel when snorkelin.,

I think my favorite quote from that thread was

"Sure I use my snorkel....chucked it at a mouse this morning in the gargage"

We took some snapshots last fall with our gear on at the local quarry. The snorkel just looks so out of place. Most of the time a the quarry I am just floating on my back till I get to the dive spot anyways. I picked a very collapsable snorkel, so I guess I know where the snorkel will be going this year (in the BC)!
