Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows of any websites that have accurate statistics on how many people snorkel compared to scuba diving, and just statistics related to both topics. Thanks in advance.
Dave

No one knows how many people SCUBA dive. You can get numbers on certifications, but how many are still active? How many are duplicate certifications? How many are still alive? How many dive without certification?

Numbers are even less accurate (if possible) for snorkelers.

you can't prove anything with statistics...

74.8 per cent of people know that.

People who snorkel don't usually belong to clubs or discuss it on the Internet, it's not exactly technical or dangerous people just do it ! So I don't think your find any statistics !!!!!!

I would say most people who scuba, do it as a sport, hobby, profession, etc. Lots of people who snorkel just do it as a diversion while on vacation. Kind of like checking out a museum or a new place to dine. I think your statisticians would have a tough time deciding who was a "hard-core" snorkeler and someone who just wanted to see what was under there once or twice.

oh yeah! Got any stats to prove it?

Nobody needs statistics really. Besides, 73% of all statistics are made up on the spot. This fact is confirmed by rougly 5 out of 10 doctors.

(and lastly, since the baseball playoffs are upon us, it should be mentioned that both the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs are undefeated this season, when leading after 9 innings.)

..before I started scuba diving. Now it's not nearly as fun. Anymore when I snorkel, it seems like at least once on each outing, I'll get into the underwater stuff, get distracted and then try for a hit of air off my snorkel and end up at the surface coughing my lungs up. :D

It just feels so natural to be able to breathe underwater now. :)

I tried to find stats for you by using 'snorkelling statistics' as a search criteria in Google but came up with nothing useful. Then I tried 'snorkelling percentage' which turned up some bits and pieces that you might fond useful.

First one is a report on Australian and North American tourists which includes some statistics that were derived from 3612 interviews / questionnaires. This can be found as an Acrobat file at:

http://www.reef.crc.org.au/research/sustaintour/pdf/GMSaxena.pdf

There is a report from Anguilla with some stats at :

http://www.gov.ai/statistics/images/February 2003 Visitor Survey Report.pdf

There is some commentary about snorkelling in teh report 'Tourism on the Carnarvon-Ningaloo Coast Between Quobba Station and Exmouth and its Implications for Sustainability of the Coast' (Snappy title!!) at:

http://www.ningaloocoast.wa.gov.au/pdf/Tourism_Disc_paper.pdf

There is also some stuff about the Great Barrier Reef at:

http://www.reef.crc.org.au/publications/news/news139.html

Hope this helps...

Cheers:wink:
