Hi all, I am new here so please pardon me if this thread is in the wrong place. I'm trying to find a dive buddy for a trip to Maui in January and a diving friend of mine recommended I use the forums on this site. Is there a buddy finder on scubaboard or a thread specifically for finding a buddy in another location? I posted in the Hawaii forum thinking that some locals would have some advice for me, but after 40+ views and no replies, I was wondering if I did something wrong.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it!

Buddy up with the DM. You will see a lot

You might give it a few more days - there are a lot of regular Maui divers who frequent that forum. Including me but I'm not going to be back to HI for a while. There is the Dive Buddy locator but I'll save you the trouble of waiting for it to load - there's only one person on it from Maui - Charlie99 - maybe send him a PM . You might PM Dive Maven also - she lives in Kihei part time and shore dives with others locally. I think she's in Kihei during the winter months.

Other things to try - select an operator for your Molokini dives and contact them. My choices would be B&B Scuba, Ed Robinson's or Mike Severn's in no order. Sometimes they have dive buddy requests. If not, pair up with the DM. There's one on every dive - sometimes two. As mentioned above, they know where the good stuff lives. Most boat trips I've done there's always been at least one person looking to pair up - I've done that twice to Molokini.

For shore diving Maui Dreams Dive Co. in Kihei has a buddy sign-up sheet in the shop. I think some Maui Dive shops (different co.) do also.

I don't think it would be too hard to find a buddy at Makena Landing or Wailea Beach in the morning either. Maybe Ulua also. Parking on the other hand...

Lastly there's the paid options. Shaka Divers does escorted shore diving in the Kihei area. Shaka Doug here is the owner. So does Maui Dreams Dive Co. Scubahawk27 here does scooter dives - he provides Apollo's. If you want to drive to West Maui (45mins.) - that's all Tiny Bubbles or Kapalua Dive Co. does. Or there's Scuba Mike - he does scooter/night dives also. One I'd do is Mala Pier with someone at night. Actually Lahaina Divers does it by boat - the legal entry at night would be difficult.

I have seen quite a few people find buddies pretty easy at Makena Landing. My friend Steve Eddy on scuba board seems to know them all when he travels here. If you want to try something very fun send me a message for scooter diving.

If you pay the trip for me id be happy to be your buddy :eyebrow:

Joking aside, is anyone else going with you? if the trip is for extensive amount of days you could have a who ever is going with to take a class. This gives you a buddy as well as some time to freshen up. im thinking your an Open Water diver though, i cant really tell what level of diving your one so im assuming your a once in a while diver. If thats not the case and your looking to do more advance deeper nitrox stuff then that wont be the best option at all. Hell maybe i completely missed the train and your looking for some technical rebreather buddys to go hit those wrecks at 300 ft lol.

if no ones going with, i would think your best bet is to convince a diving friend to go, if not find someone thats local to Maui. Im not a fan of getting a DM tho that's just me.

good luck with your trip, hope its a blast

Personally I would just ping the op and let them know your a single. They will likely pair you with another single or a DM, but the arrangement could vary with each day you are diving. I do a fair amount of dive travel on my own and it has never been a problem. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
