Dived there today water temp was 37C. The vis was bad at depth (80') < 12'. Kinda strange considering that it usually improves with depth at that location. It took us a while to get started as we had to push large chunks of ice away from the shoreline at our entry point to make it safer.

People have died at this location with ice blowing in and trapping you. Please say you where on static lines when you did this dive.

Wow, that sounds cold! What do you do if the ice is back on your entry point when you want to exit? Do you have to leave someone on the shoreline?

I Heard from a local that it was iceing over
But if the wind blows it can move out fairly fast

The reason we moved the ice out of the way was to make it easier/safer to walk into the water from shore, less of a chance to slip on the ice as we moved into the lake. Coming back out safely was just a matter of gently pushing the ice out of the way again. This was easily handled but you could easily tell the diving days here other than an ice dive, are numbered. My initial post should have read 37F for temp.

Do you know what the shore's like in Barrie. Was thinking of doing the JC Morrison over the holidays, but not if it's iced.
Thanks

Pushing the ice away from shore is a stupped practice, the same way two individuals lost there lives years ago, you have no way of controlling the wind that pushes ice flows over into Big Bay point unanounced. The fact that you dove with out a static line shows you have no training for this type of diving. Think before you take chances like that, what you may seam as a safe situation is the same situation that killed in the past. Stay away from the ice in this location.
