(why the need for opt-in in the first place?)
The need for opt-ins...
Prior to the opt-in DIR forum, there were several reported posts a day in the DIR forums. Non-DIR members posting in the DIR forum were "trolling" or asking non-DIR questions. Making things opt in - where members must be DIR trained has reduced the number of reported posts drastically. People can talk about specific topics without having non-DIR answers - it eliminates clutter.
Singles Forum (that seems obvious right?)
A "Less than Family Oriented Area" - this area "The Pub" which was created in December was created to allow members an area to cut loose in a PG-Rated environment, while not having the "workplace friendly" restriction. Prior to this, there were many complaints about "inappropriate" postings on the forums, and the "degradation of SB from a family friendly board" etc. The Pub has addressed that "problem" (as people saw it) and has been a repository for anything that is "over the line" of the workplace friendly type attitude that should be expressed on the board as a whole. So far, it seems to be working, in that the rest of the board is friendlier... Who would have thunk it right?
The Goal of the compartmentalizing of the board is to make the board as a whole a better reference for divers. Then you have the Opt-In forums which satisfy many people's needs. Our Instructor 2 Instructor forum is a place for instructors to speak freely about issues that effect them. The beauty is - that if they don't want to speak privately between other instructors, they can post in a general discussion forum. So Opt-Ins provide more choice.
As NetDoc has stated before... ScubaBoard is YOUR (meaning everyone's) forum. We try to provide amicable solutions to issues to satisfy the most users. Even if that group may be the "vocal minority" that may be satisfied - generally the outcome is still positive for the board as a whole. If a certain opt-in forum upsets you, then opt-out of it; then it doesn't exist even if you click on "NEW POSTS" (which is how I view the forums)
So perhaps - if you only viewed one specific area, "Rocky Mountain Oysters" for example - every time you view the forums, it may seem less "busy" because of the creation of more niche areas. So my suggestion to those is - expand your horizons... View
New Posts, and see what everyone is talking about. You might be surprised.
