now, some can opt into a less than family friendly board...

or not opt in, as the case may be ... no one can force anyone to read a thread whose subject matter they are not interested in

different strokes for different folks ... why the need to control what everyone on this board does or doesn't do in an appropriate forum?

or, threads (and posters...) can be subject to individual ridicule, simply because they believe in a different ideal/humor/what is humor/ or, what should not be humor than some...

well ... the TOS still does not allow personal attacks ... as for the rest, one does need a thick skin on the internet, given the huge variety of people who are free to post

and yes, there will always be butt-holes among those who post on ScubaBoard .... i'd love to see the changes to the TOS needed to prevent that

The board has self-segregated somewhat. As lamont mentioned above, he pretty much sticks to DIR, a few Tech boards, probably the Orca board, and the math club. :) So, I rarely get to read much of anything he posts, especially if he, like others, stay away from replying to Main Forums posts.

Also, self-segregation (by definition) means a poster tends to visit forums which he/she favors due to a level of comfort that comes from familiarity, conformity, and a fondness for cliques. Opt-in forums make it difficult for newbies (why the need for opt-in in the first place?)

High school never ends: athletes, popular kids, nerds, dweebs, goths, band members, audio/visual, granola chicks, stoners, kickers, gearheads, waste-oids, that foreign dude from Sweden, etc.

Dang, gotta' give lamont a wedgie...

Nor have I stated anything different

Yet, they go on every day in opt-in forums and standard forums as well....

That makes two of us!

I feel like we are all locked in different rooms.

I don't know about "locked" but I know I spend my time in specific areas.

I experience SB through the New Posts button and it's filtered scope. I am oblivious to many parts of the forum, by choice.

(why the need for opt-in in the first place?)

The need for opt-ins...

Prior to the opt-in DIR forum, there were several reported posts a day in the DIR forums. Non-DIR members posting in the DIR forum were "trolling" or asking non-DIR questions. Making things opt in - where members must be DIR trained has reduced the number of reported posts drastically. People can talk about specific topics without having non-DIR answers - it eliminates clutter.

Singles Forum (that seems obvious right?)

A "Less than Family Oriented Area" - this area "The Pub" which was created in December was created to allow members an area to cut loose in a PG-Rated environment, while not having the "workplace friendly" restriction. Prior to this, there were many complaints about "inappropriate" postings on the forums, and the "degradation of SB from a family friendly board" etc. The Pub has addressed that "problem" (as people saw it) and has been a repository for anything that is "over the line" of the workplace friendly type attitude that should be expressed on the board as a whole. So far, it seems to be working, in that the rest of the board is friendlier... Who would have thunk it right?

The Goal of the compartmentalizing of the board is to make the board as a whole a better reference for divers. Then you have the Opt-In forums which satisfy many people's needs. Our Instructor 2 Instructor forum is a place for instructors to speak freely about issues that effect them. The beauty is - that if they don't want to speak privately between other instructors, they can post in a general discussion forum. So Opt-Ins provide more choice. :)

As NetDoc has stated before... ScubaBoard is YOUR (meaning everyone's) forum. We try to provide amicable solutions to issues to satisfy the most users. Even if that group may be the "vocal minority" that may be satisfied - generally the outcome is still positive for the board as a whole. If a certain opt-in forum upsets you, then opt-out of it; then it doesn't exist even if you click on "NEW POSTS" (which is how I view the forums)

So perhaps - if you only viewed one specific area, "Rocky Mountain Oysters" for example - every time you view the forums, it may seem less "busy" because of the creation of more niche areas. So my suggestion to those is - expand your horizons... View New Posts, and see what everyone is talking about. You might be surprised. :D

As always, we are open to suggestions from either of you. However, I don't think I am going anywhere! :D

Unfortunately, there are always going to be some personality conflicts in any community: online or face to face. While it's clear to either party who the "butt-hole" is, it is less so to those outside of the fray.

i had tons of posts in there before i ever went to see any of them. Zee as well.

I'm with Mikey on this one, Mrs A. Besides, you have already personally met one of them! Well, 2 if you count Veitch :D

I saw Mike V's picture and article in a magazine at Fisheye dive shop on Boracay. Does that count as meeting him? When I saw it I told everyone (who would listen), "hey, I almost know this guy" !!!
