myself and a friend are going to the florida keys in september having both just passed our open water cert. my buddy has had a life long fascination with sharks, can anyone recomend a good area in the keys to dive to give us the best chance of spotting a shark? also which species are indigenous to the keys area?
thanks in advance.

Nurse sharks like to hang around the Benwood, and old broken down wreck that is shallow and easy to dive... even for kids.

Common Sharks of Florida

These are the most common, but as the article says, the larger sharks can be in the water. Never fear though, it is a treat to see a shark on your dives. The more calm you are in the water, the better you tend to see them. They tend to come towards you then veer off, mostly beacuse their vision is limited and they aren't interested in you. Nurse sharks are the most common and one must go to the sand and look under the reef overhangs to seek them out.

Enjoy your trip!
Good luck!

try the florida keys dive center on plantation key.. we saw hammer heads at conch wall and nurse sharks on horseshoe reef . Saw one nurse shark at looe reef using inner sapce dive shop. Good luck, the hammerheads came through really fast and did not return

I just got back from the Keys. The only sharks I saw were nurse. I did hear a couple of DM's talking about two Bull sharks camping on the Duane.

We saw lots of sharks on some of our dives on Looe Key. I think there were maybe 4 or 5 of them. 1 or 2 nurse and 2-3 others.

the City of Washington had sharks there a couple of dives... especially at night.

Here are some pics of the sharks at Looe Key.

:eek:fftopic: and I apologize for that.

That is great Mike. It is this sort of thing that I do not get to appreciate when diving at home because it is all Fresh water. I have only "happened" on a "non-nurse" shark once and it was a baby black tip maybe 18"-24" long in Cozumel. It was great.

in the keys i saw a bull on the duane. otherwise only nurse sharks. friend of mine saw two hammers on molasses.

If you want a guarentee'd spot in the keys to see sharks, go to the Islamorads Fish Market at sunset.

Every day at Sunset they feed the fish scraps to the fish. it brings in several large tarpon and some sharks like clockwork....

you can see the sharks patrolling the lagoon/marina for about an hour before "Feeding time".
