Poseidon Xstream regs (1st, 2nd and AAS). When they were new, best breathing regs I have ever had, comfortable, lack of bubble interference and so on. However once they had had first service always giving problems, whistling, hard first stage, breathing through water on the octo, breathing through water on the PSS. Everybody I have talked to who has owned them has said the same thing. "Great when they are new but difficult to service and very delicate".

Cressi Pro Light Fins. I was glad to get rid of those!

Hmm..
For me, I got a back inflate Tusa Pro Cubic BC. I dont have issues with it but perhaps with how much we paid.

When we started out we were hooked onto the line the dive shop was reeling.. Soon we found the light and have since stopped even going to the diveshop altogether.

We could of saved a ton had we gone online instead of buying from where we got certified.

I love my halcyon bp/w but I do wish it didn't have all the damn H's on the webbing.

I Don't really have any other regrets as I buy most of my gear used and I can (and have) turn around and sell it for about what I paid for it if it isn't to my liking.

1. Any piece of wetsuit material that sez "Hyperstretch" or "Progressive Stretch" or anything similarly named by those accursed marketers. This stuff is completely incompatible with velcro. In fact it seems that the velcro hooks love the hyperstretch material more than the stuff they are supposed to mate to. My cummerbund actually attached so tightly to one of my gloves I was left barehanded while trying to disengage. Sheesh. So now my "new" suit looks like a really old one with all of the pilling. Well maybe that isn't so bad....I do have a "saltier" look now despite the new gear (20 year surface intervals just suck).

2. Amphibian fins. Gimmicky and not durable. After 10 dives they looks like they have been through the wars. Blades are kinked permanently now and other plastic parts have broken off. I wonder what it would be like to have the lock on just one foot fail during a dive.....yup dude...I can swim circles around you now.

3. Air2...octoZ thingie. Just couldn't get used to the feel of it (either in my mouth or in my hand) and it just seemed that bouyancy control was going to get a whole lot more complicated in a share situation.

Thank you TSandM for starting this thread 3 years ago. Lots of good reading and learned a lot ( a bit of a slog though). It's funny....I also learned that nearly every piece of my gear is either a piece of crap or ....the best thing that ever hit the water. Pretty broad spectrum of opinion...that's what makes this forum so much fun to read. ;-D

My snorkel as I do not use it and it was expensive. (some kind of Tusa one)

My fins, they are buoyant and make my feet float. (Tusa Tri Ex)

Beuchat 5mm gloves as you can barely move your hands in them and they take ages to get on.

The rest I like.

My Tusa snorkel ... one of those fancy ones which you can fold up! I only use it when required (i.e. on a training course) but I guess the benefit of its flexiness is that it can (and does) take a good beating at the bottom of my bag.

A Sea & Sea MX10 was another complete waste. A nice present from the wife for Christmas (2 years ago!!), she's usually quite up to speed in all things technology - but not in this case. It was second-hand, and more times than not the film would slip anyway! Must eBay that some day.

Just shelled out for an Aqualung Mikron and a Mares Icon today - will be diving with them in 3 weeks time in the Red Sea. Hope I don't come to regret those.

One I'm most worried about at the moment - the Mares 2D console. Ummed and ahhed about whether to get the 2D or just a 1D but felt the depth gauge would be handy when I (inevitably) left my computer at home one day.

I'm another one of those OW class suckers who bought the $50 dry snorkel. Snorkels have no use, the clip keeps falling off, and to top it off, I just bought a $2 silicone strap to make sure that I keep the darn thing attached to my mask when I dive and I don't even use it!

And, although most of my personal gear is fine, I regret buying anything from my LDS, whether it works or not. [insert inappropriate bashing of LDS here] I feel that I could have gotten better/equivalent gear and advice somewhere else (and now after TONS of research know that to be true). And I do want to point out that scuba.com, Sport Chalet, ScubaToys, and FishEye Scuba in Folsom, CA have been absolutely a gem to work with as I order stuff online or over the phone and find that it isn't working/not as I imagined/not compatible with what I have.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed. I almost bought a tank knocker last night and have found them to be a highly mentioned item of "crap" as well as various retractors, clips, and "diving junk" that is great in theory and once you get down there really serves no purpose or just doesn't work.

Now can anyone recommend an above water/below water noise maker? I am looking for something that U/W will get my buddy's attention (as he is normally swimming off in the wrong direction) and he feels that we need something above water to get the dive boat's attention.

A decent dive light works pretty well for underwater communication. If they donÃÕ see it, you can wrap it against your tank for noise. Above, take a whistle. DAN sells a neat SMB package with a whistle and mirror.
