OTOH it can be a great dive. I was with a team today doing a deep dive in the Hole, and it was a superb day. But all divers were experienced and comfortable on that sort of dive - it's a very different story when people haven't done that sort of thing before.

I have mixed opinion about the Blue Hole dive. I tell people that its heavily chaperoned, by a Divemaster being in fount and another in Back of what is like a conga line passing through the adventure.
However I don't think that's a possible scenario with some of the shops when they send 16 to 20 divers down with one dive master.
Its a national park with a large entry fee. I think some regulation could be afforded.
This week in the local news the bones of a diver missing for 7 years was found on the bottom by some tech divers. I was called in to be on the search and rescue op. It was sad he was diving with his young sons.

IMO minimum DM numbers should be one per five divers, with an absolute minimum of 2 DMs unless there's just one diver. With duties clearly defined - low DM ensures no-one goes below, high DM that no-one goes above.

I don't know how regulation could be provided or enforced, and I don't know what valid reason there is for collecting such a large fee.

Hello All,

Great Thread!

I'm not so convinced about the merits of diving the famous Blue Hole, though I have to admit the many pictures archived of the site still take my breath away.

I'm looking at my second trip to Belize, coming up in March. Last trip was about 12 years ago. I'm really looking forward to the trip, as I'm very, very curious as to how much development has changed the "charm" of the Island. Our senior Senator, here in Connecticut, has made Belize one of his pet projects for the last 18 years.

I'd like to bring this thread back to original topic -- developing a list of active, qualified, and recommended operators still in ops on Ambergris. Peter, I think your perspective is especially enlightening. My wife and I would like to join a good operator in the area, for maybe 4-5 dives. We're staying just South of San Pedro, at the Victoria House. The Vic House appears to have a working pier/dock, so I'm hoping it's not too far for local operators to come pick us up. We've got all our own gear, just need weights and tanks (air, Nitrox a plus, but not required), as they don't seem to travel well. I've been diving since 1979, but my wife was certified in 2000. I'd guess I'd qualify the pair of us as "reasonably qualified". I won't leave her side, and I won't do anything risky. My days of exploring caves and high-risk wrecks are long over. The long drift dives along the walls are especially attractive in Belize. In an environment like Belize, I can probably find more things to look at in a 10 meter square, than a lifetime in New England. We're looking for a good operator, with several good DM's. I'd like to see groups of less than a dozen. We won't be much a drag on any operation, but I really don't want to be babysitting any other divers.
So far, Ecologic keeps popping up in the thread. The Vic House has a PADI dive shop, but doesn't seem to have an on-site operator. Kind of odd.
Any advice help is greatly appreciated, and thanks for reading.
Peter

VH does have a resident dive center that I believe is nowadays owned by the hotel (could be wrong on that). Certainly it rarely seems to operate. Most dive centers in the town of San Pedro will service VH, and I append a list of the ones I can remember. Apologies if I miss any. There are other operators well north of town (Elbert's White Sands being one such) but I don't know that they'd be prepared to make that journey for a couple of divers. If they were coming that way anyway (VH is on the way to Hol Chan from San Pedro) than that might be different.

I'm not going to attempt to rank these operators for two reasons. Firstly I don't think SP has any "bad" operators, and I would be perfectly happy to dive with any of them. Can't say that of all other areas of Belize. And secondly, even though I no longer have my own dive operation here I do work with all these people from time to time and it would be inappropriate for me to signify preferences. It probably is fair comment that some operate differently from others, maybe charging a bit more and offering more individualised service, and I can add my 2p worth on that if you wish.

Two things to be understood. Reviews in places such as here or TripAdvisor tend to be more numerous for the busier operators. Look for quality, not quantity, unless you like being with a large crowd. And secondly, many/most operators work with local hotels on a commission basis, and there are several exclusivity arrangements that you won't be told about even if you ask. Take any recommendation by an hotel or anyone who could stand to gain with a large pinch of salt.

Two further points on commissions. The generally prevailing rate is 20% of the gross rack price, or sometimes the actual price charged if a significant discount has been given. But there is a tendency to offer more than this 20%, sometimes markedly more, to "steal" business from other operators. Remember that you, the customer, generally know nothing of this. Clearly if you go directly to the dive operator and don't involve the hotel in any way, there'll be no commission payable and the operator will be better placed to offer you a discount.

The final point is that not all dive operators do business on this basis. At least one highly regarded one pays no commission, so is never mentioned by hotels expecting it. And a few hotels don't demand commission, so their recommendations may be more objective.

My list, going north from VH:-
- Belize Diving Adventures (Everette and Enes, Belizean husband and wife team, highly experienced)
- Ramon's Village (a little pricier than some, and possibly the better for it)
- AquaDives (now the largest operator, some excellent divemasters, very good boats including the largest on the island for atoll trips, used to have a poor reputation that's no longer merited, the only operator in the whole of Belize capable of supporting serious technical divers)
- Bottom Time (long established and well regarded but with a very low profile)
- Ambergris Divers (well established, nice boats, some good staff)
- Island Divers (new boy on the block, operating out of Protech's previous premises, Rudi is a new instructor but a well established and popular divemaster)
- Amigos del Mar (traditionally the "gold plated" operator here, flagged a bit after their big boat spectacularly blew up and sank last year, but they've just replaced it with a very smart brand new big boat that's around the same size as AquaDives', on the way back up)
- Ecologic (been around for two or three years, some good staff)
- Chuck & Robbie (two person operation that's acquired a very high reputation, don't pay commission), and lastly
- Patojo's (only service their own hotel guests and people who go to the trouble of going to them, but very highly regarded by people who take that trouble).

I know I've missed one or two minor players, mainly because I can't remember their names and know very little about them. But as I said above, I'd willingly dive with any of these operators (if they gave me the dive free!).

I've dove with Ramon's twice. First in Oct 2006 when we got certified by Elbert Greer while he was still there and then in May 2007 (first dive again with Elbert then 9 more with other DM's). They were a good op. Small boats but they never took out more than 6 divers, always returned to Ramon's between dives. Had multiple boats and seemed to group divers together based on ability. I remember them going to pick up a diver once at VH. We saw other ops that chummed for nurse sharks, even grabbed onto the nurse sharks, Ramon's DM's were more environmentally minded.

My wife and I (PADI DMs) spend most of our water time wreck diving offshore North Carolina coast and are also interested in the warm waters of the Caribbean and Ambergris Caye dive operators. We have a reservation at the Belize Legacy Beach Resort just north of San Pedro. Suya Tours and Dive Center are on site and offer scuba, snorkeling, and onshore tours, but no one has mentioned them. Anyone know the history of the operation?

Many thanks for the information on Ambergris Caye and Belize diving!
