BTW, mask clearing does not require a huge blast of air. It only requires a slight amount of air while gently pressing on the top of the mask. Don’t over do it and you will be fine.

Thanks for the advice. Are you giving it to me or the original author of the thread?

Actually to the OP but if it helps anyone else, groovy!

I know it's been a few months since I was certified, but isn't wearing earplugs forbidden because it makes it practically impossible to equalize your ears?

Doc's ProPlugs makes vented ear plugs for SCUBA divers. I thought they seemed like a bad idea, until my ENT doctor recommended them to me. I used them for the first time last weekend, and I can honestly say that I've never had an easier time equalizing my ears.

Don't Quit! So many divers have the same problem when they first start their classes.
When I first had to take my mask off, it was 12ft underwater, and water went up my nose twice. My best advice for you is to keep trying, practicing, and I know you'll get it.

I posted about a breathing issue I was having. I got good advice, and made myself overcome it. You can as well. And try to practice as often as you can. I'm still wearing my mask and snorkel in the shower every day. Don't give up. Your wife will be proud.

Hi guys, thanks for everything! We just returned from the scuba trip to Grand Cayman and both my wife and I are now certified divers.

We went on 20 dives over the course of the week, actually my wife did 21 as she went on a night dive that I passed on.

No problems on any of the dives but I did get nervous on two of the dives where we went below 100 feet, and my air use went up and I ran out of time before everybody else.

Already looking forward to our next trip!

Congrats on getting certified... I am getting certified in about 2.5 weeks in the Saint Laurence River.

Congrats! I'm glad that you were able to resolve the issue.

Excellent!

GREAT JOB.... My wife and I recently returned from Grand Cayman also. She is a newly certified Advanced diver and working toward her Rescue Diver cert. She had many of your issues with nose breathing and mask removal anxiety early in her diving. Keep diving and continue your education, the learning environment is a great place to re-enforce skills and it truly keeps these types of issues from ever returning in the future. Practice practice practice.

I also had mask skill issues but overcame them. I just read through this whole thread and even though I didnt offer advice I know where you were coming from. a big CONGRATULATIONS!to you and your wife. Welcome to our world and wow 20 dives over the course of the week, cant wait till I can take one of them vacations.
