I called six shops in Key West today. None of them allow doubles, most of the shops only stay at the wreck between 20-30 min., and some of them only let you go to 100' because they only offer guided tours. Just some info for those of you thinking about diving it. Prices ranged from $55-$99 without any gear.

I have never dove any types of wrecks like these so forgive my ignorance. But, is it contracted to the local dive shops in some way to prevent private boats from mooring up there? If not, than what is the proper etiquette. Why would I want to pay 50-100 bucks to a dive shop when I can go there for free!!

Call Captains Corner and get on the Sea Eagle. They have the lowest trip prices on the Island, but the crew is great and they are all about a good time, not raping you for your hard earned money like some other operators in town are doing by hyper-inflating their rates.

Amen. It's disgusting that some of these guys are getting an extra 30 bucks a diver to go 6 miles out. They really know how to build a loyal customer base.

mooring balls are first come, first served.

Thanks Mike,

That's what I was thinking.......... So why don't a group of SB'ers get together on a boat and do a Vandenberg Dive, it would be more fun than going with strangers.

Let us know when you want to go....and I know myself and LBHeyman will be in!

Its crazy to drive all the way down to Key West and they will only take you out there for one dive? I am not understanding why? If you are going all the way out there, might as well do a two tank dive on it.

Like a boat-load of SBers wouldn't be strange.

Back to Key West being behind in the times. I have booked a private charter so that I can do back to back on the Vandy. But get this, Nitrox is practically non exsitent except for a few shops. On top of that no one rents tanks out unless you are diving with them. In this economy money is money. Also, Why is it so hard to find higher volume lp steel tanks in this area. I would think with all of these wrecks the demand for longer bottom times would be greater. The fact is with a LP 110 and 30% nitrox I can stay on the Vandenberg alot longer. It sounds like there is an opportunity for a shop to set the bar. Operators, in Key West no offensive meant but you have now become the focal point of diving on the East Coast if not the USA. It is time to step up to the plate. What does everyone else think?

I've got a trip to the Key's planned in August and was thinking of splitting the time between Key Largo and Key West but if they are only offering one tank dives on the Vandenburg I may just dive Key West one day and be done with it. There is plenty to see in Key Largo and it's much cheaper! :shakehead:
