I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum here but I'd like to start another thread about books to read that are about diving or anything ocean related whether it be about recreational or commercial diving or sailing or sport or commercial fishing. Mysteries and other fiction are welcome here.
I read a lot and I'm always looking for new material.

There are lots of threads about diving-specific enthusiast books like The Silent World, Caverns Measureless To Man, Shadow Divers, Raising the Dead/Diving Into Darkness etc

If you mean something less specific, then you might enjoy Diver by Tony Groom (commercial diving), Helldiver's Rodeo (umm.. gonzo spearfishing?) or Above Us the Waves & Silent Running (submarines), although these are all 'true life' books rather than fiction

For fiction, ummm... maybe some Peter Benchley? eg The Deep or Jaws

One of my favorite "diving" books is Drowned Hopes by Donald Westlake. The essential plot of the story is, before being cought, a bank robber burries his loot in a town that is flooded when a reservoir was created while he was in prison. Anyway, he gets a team of non-diving criminals together to retrieve the money. They learn to dive and their first plan is to just follow an old map, walk along the bottom of the lake to where the money is an simply dig it up. Nothing goes according to plan and its all very funny. Westlake does a good job describing the diving scenes.

Dark Descent is about diving the Empress of Ireland up in the St Lawrence.

Dragon Sea is about underwater achaeology/salvage/treasure hunting

The Silent World is Cousteau's first diving book

If you are interested in submarines as well, check out Iron Coffins and Blind Man's Bluff.

Hi Steven,
I'd suggest staring at page one of this forum and just read the threads that already exist. About 80% of them deal with book reviews. In the next little while I'm going to put together a list of titles in my little library which I will link to this thread for you.
Dale.

people do review books that involve diving or just about anything in the ocean on this thread. other threads over the last few years have listed lots of books. you might want to do a key word search on diving books or some combination of those to find the threads.

I, too, love to read books that have diving built into the plot but do not necessarily have to be about diving. One of the best books about diving that I ever read is Jacob's Well by Stephen Harrigan. I first read it in 1984 and re-read it every so often. It is a book about complicated people in complicated relationships with each other. A very human story in which diving, especially cave diving, sets the environment but is not the central theme of the story. For people interested in coral reefs, Harrigan also authored 'Water and Light' which is a non-fiction book. He is an excellent author. Unfortunately, Jacob's Well is out of print, but a number of copies were listed on Alibris.

Oops, sorry about that but thanks to everyone for the great suggestions.
Since I started this thread I've found a website that is all about book reviews-
Share Book Recommendations With Your Friends, Join Book Clubs, Answer Trivia
and I've written some of my own about the books I've read recently.
Anybody else on ScubaBoard have an account?

Sorry to dig up a thread that is almost a year old now, but I've got an account at Goodreads. It's a great website with some really cool and knowledgable people.
