My wife and I just finished our OW cert and took our first dive trip to Ambergris Caye in Belize. Had a fantastic time but we quickly realized we had a problem. We exchange amorous contact often throughout our days together as sign of affection. While diving, though we were close and often held hands, we needed some other method to signal our love. Our first attempt was a two-hand figure of a heart (picture attached).

That didn't work so well because it always had to be made in front of our bodies or it came out deformed and our bodies weren't always fully facing each other. So we came up with a one-hand heart (picture attached).

I'm curious what other custom hand signals people have with their regular dive partners.

right hand with the thumb and finger extended in the L shape tapping the top of our mask... Lotsa Love. it has become so popular that SB gave it a smilie :lotsalove:

ASL does it like this:

"I Love YOU!"

Yeah, that's also the international metal band symbol for ROCK ON! We went custom :) and it doubles as an OK/OK check. I should look into more ASL for underwater though.

You are so bad...lol!

I have a pair of diver buddies that talk as much underwater as they do above water. It's so funny, I really wonder if they actually see anything during their dives. It is good to have good communication skills with your buddy. It keeps you from writing so much on a slate!

What? It really is the smilie name based on a group of us who use it underwater... The name of that smilie really is : lotsalove :

Remove the spaces between colons and you will see the result.

My girlfriend and I have custom signals of affection for each other too.

My favorite signal for affection is the underwater hug. Swim up and hug someone tight, and hold them close for a long time.

It has a combined meaning, a melding of "Sharing the moment with you" and "I'm peeing right now."

It loses it's meaning when you're in a dry suit and she closes that pee-valve!

Wish I knew American Sign but I'd probably be the only one on the boat.
