Yeah I have an urge to go back thru my last 200 posts to quote and thank some. It was a nice idea that some chose to abuse.

Also available in Post Icons.

Well, the "Thanks" button could only be used to express one's positive reaction.
Having both the  and  button, those who wish to express their feelings to a certain post without writing will be given an opportunity. Also, when a certain post gets lots of "thanks" clicks, there is no telling whether the post is truly useful, or supported by a biased bunch. If the "ups" and "downs" user names are shown, this will probably advance the polarization, but with only an "ups" and "downs" counter, people will have a tool to understand whether an opinion is conflicting or agreeable. Especially to those of us who are not native English speakers, writing a compact post can be quite demanding, while clicking a button is quite easy.

As for the thanks count, I do miss it. I'm not inclined to collect the count, but for a novice like me, being useful to another diver does mean something, and also gives me a sense of building trust brick by brick.

But how can anyone, be it the board, Pete, the members, or whomever keep it from happening all over again? New people join Scubaboard all the time. What's to keep a future group from starting the process all over again even if it's truly just in fun.

Are the board/moderators now suppose to start trying to decide which "Thanks" are genuine and which should be removed if some are reported to them?

Well to that I say, well it will fix the problem for now. If a future group decides to have fun with the Thanks button then have a discussion with them and tell them that they may cause the Thanks button to be removed. It's likely they would stop. If they don't, then the mods can deal with that at the time. It doesn't seem necessary to remove the Thanks button now because of a "what if" in the future.

It also goes back to the posts that several people have made of...so what if someone abuses the thanks button? Why do some people care so much?

I'm not arguing this as a former thanks button abuser who wants it back to use/abuse. I'm arguing this as someone who doesn't think it's fair that thousands of users lost their ability to use the Thanks button because of the actions of myself and a handful of others.

Take my thanks button away for all I care, but I think it should be returned to the majority of users.

Maybe we should have a "F*@k You" button ... betchya that one would get used a lot ... :blinking:

What? The board is there to make decisions such as this even if folks don't like the outcome. Most of us won't ever know all the discussions/facts that went in to making the decision. Can you imagine what a cluster f@#* it would be to ask the members? Are they suppose to wait for 100,000 responses or 50,000 or even 25,000?

Even if decisions are made that I/we don't like, I'm glad they are in place to make them.

Maybe we could have used the thanks button as a vote yes! :D

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Please keep your comments on the topic at hand.

Oh I thought this was shut so I posted it elsewhere :) Anyway:

The thanks thing was something that we just thought was fun to do :headscratch:

As far as dog piling...I'd love to see any post in which we said "lets dog pile on <insert name> because..."

http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/fl...v-post5299756.html?highlight=dog*#post5299756

Onespeed:
I've never promoted dogpiling before but have at it with this guy, if you read the thread he's basically trying to tell Em how to order pizza for ITK, major assbag, IJS. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/5299754-post25.html

June 11 2010.

The only thing we do (which is no different than MoF, and possibly other chat threads) is link to a thread which we find either interesting, odd, funny, annoying, etc so other people could read what we read. If friends also find it interesting, odd, funny, annoying etc and choose to post...that isn't us calling on the group to dogpile. It's a group of friends who conversate about everything, including what we read on ScubaBoard. There is no conspiracy here.

I never said there was a conspiracy and I couldn't care less about what you post. But you are naive if you do not realise why people dislike you and your friends. Some of you post nasty stuff about others both publicly and privately from time to time. That puts people off.

In regards to nasty PMs...I'd be curious to see something I've said in PM that I haven't said on the board. I'm usually very open and honest about my opinions on things and people, I know you certainly know that.

I don't actually know who you are, or whether you are honest or not. I know roughly that you post in the chat threads. That is all. The PMs were not from you though, that I can remember.

And back to the original topic, what does any of that have to do with the Thanks Button?

It has a lot to do with it. The chat threads are were there was all this 'thanking' going on. As I've said I think people should be left to thank and post whatever they want, but I am just pointing out it goes a lot further than just the thanks button.

It also goes back to the posts that several people have made of...so what if someone abuses the thanks button? Why do some people care so much?

I agree. I liked the "Thanks" button and I could care less if some people wanted to Thank others a million times. Never bothered me at all. As a matter of fact, I would sometimes have fun with the concept by saying so-and-so must be the best poster on SB because they had been "Thanked" like 20,000+ times. But I do see how some people who may actually take some pride in being Thanked for useful posts and those that Thank people on a serious note were annoyed by the whole thing. I guess I just don't see an easy fix for the situation.

Can someone explain how a thanks button can be abused. Im really having a hard time wrapping my head around how an ambiguous nicety is abusable.

The dog piling problem is certainly more disruptive, albeit a different issue, but I think that's mostly organized in PMs and IMs.
Hmm, I am sorry to see it go and I must say I never really felt it was abused. Actually this was the only board I participate in that had the feature, I always thought it was kind of unique.

Wont it make threads very long now, with quotes and "Thanks" - just wondering.?
Two probable results...
More posts just to says thanks, :thumb:, :clapping:, and since TY and +1 are too short for a post - the thanked post will get quoted more, yielding hard to scroll threads, and

Less gratitude shown by those who don't want to bother.
I was a heavy user of the Thanks button, often just to be cordial.

I guess I just don't see an easy fix for the situation.

The easy fix for the situation (at this time) is that we (the "thanks abusers") will stop abusing the thanks button. If some other group decides that it's fun to see a bunch of colorful names under their posts, like we did, then I say the mods can deal with it at that time.

For now, I apologize on behalf of the abusers and say bring back the thanks button for the masses.
