I think the Cobalt is to other dive computers what the iPhone was to other telephones when it came out.

The X1 was called the iPhone of dive computers when it first came out. By eliminating buttons, and using intuitive menus and an accelerometer, navigation felt a lot like an iPhone. By contrast, the Cobalt still uses directional buttons. I would argue that the sliders on the Uemis computer are a lot more innovative. Anyway, each person has the freedom of choice.

No plans to do so from what I hear...

:coffee:

You're probably right. There are just so many people that seem to prefer a wrist mount computer and don't like the console style. I'd have to believe that if they did offer both, the wrist mount would far out sell the other.

Well, I'm one of those in line, having plunked down a deposit about a month ago. I've hung up my fins for the winter, so I'm in no hurry but still looking forward to playing with it when it (finally) arrives.

I prefer a console since I already wear a dive watch, but I bet Atomic will release a wrist mount in the next couple of years. I find the arguing back and forth over console vs wrist mount rather tiresome, frankly, and much like the never ending debate over splits vs paddles. Just go with your preference and don't give a **** what others think.

X1 definitely was (still is?) a standard setter. But I think the point is still good - bright colours and easy menus will usually do more for product popularity than, say, algorithm or depth rating. Particularly for the recreational market.

umm, Scubatoys told me Atomic will be releasing a 'wrist mount' COBALT by this time next year, plus there's another recent COBALT thread here on SB where a guy who's actually on Atomic's design/engineering team for the COBALT flat out states they are coming out with a 'wrist mount' COBALT, they just decided to introduce the console version first.

I'd be very interested to see a detailed comparison review of the Cobalt vs. the X1, from price to features and, especially, ease of use.

Richard.

The early adapters will do the true beta testing. It will all be interesting.

If you don't care what others think--as many profess--what is the point of coming to a discussion board? There are, no doubt, a lot of tiresome arguments, but that is mostly the product of repetition. Luckily, you have no obligation to read each and every one of them.

Agreed, and sorry if I came off as a bit of a grouch. My bad.

But it's not the repetition that I find tiresome. It's the arguments based on ego.

X1 is a technical diving computer. The Cobalt is recreation and doesn't do trimix. The 2 computers are totally different and someone looking for an X1 would never consider a Cobalt and vice versa.

Also the cobalt does "gas switching underwater" with an HP quick disconnect but I highly doubt that would be anywhere near as easy as with a wireless wristmount and with a lot (3) more dangling hoses.

The cobalt definitely has a nice display and having a compass is nice (if it works), but it doesn't do anything groundbreaking to be compared to an Iphone (not that the Iphone is that cool).

Its price point is going to be very high considering its features and the air integration is wonderful for someone who already carries a tethered SPG, but will be a turnoff for wrist mounties.

My bet goes for it being similar to an iphone in the respect that it will cost twice as much as other devices that have the same functions, be costly to maintain, with its main advantage being its looks/image compared to other computers.
