So it has been literally a few years since I have been on this site. Last time I was here, I sold my gear because my wife and I couldn't afford for me to dive so I gave it up.

Well, we've been talking and now we have some friends who are interested. I am going to get my wife certified and probably going to begin slowly getting gear again.

So I absolutely HATE that I got rid of my gear...It wasnt the best, but it was mine and I loved it.

So how should I go about getting new stuff? I know there is a stigma about buying used, but I really cannot afford new. Also, I am generally thinking I should buy my wife the better gear. I can handle myself pretty well under water, but she is a little more unsure of herself.

Can anyone point me in a helpful direction? Maybe someone wants to donate some gear because they feel really bad for me? (Ok, so maybe not....)

So it is good to be back on the board. I missed being here. I guess diving got in my blood.

eBay, Craigslist and the ScubaBoard classifieds should give you more than enough resources to replenish your gear supply.

I certainly don't see any reason not to buy used gear. Just have it serviced/inspected by a qualified technician before diving it.

Welcome back and have fun diving with your wife.

Well, when I was first buying my gear, everyone on the board told me not to buy used.

(So I am wondering when the "I told ya so's" from people who remember me will end up rolling in...)

What order should I purchase my gear in? I would think reg would be priority???

I dove this week with a DM in Cozumel who has had the same BC for over 6 years. Still works fine. I bought a mix of used and new gear. Mostly from leisurepro (no affiliation) and have been happy with it. It was cheap, and works well.

Good luck.

Hmm...last time I was here, I told everyone that I bought a snorkel package from leisurepro and MAN did I get BLASTED! Everyone told me to avoid leisurepro at all costs. Has that changed?

I'd cruise the local shops to see if they have used gears to buy.

Call me paranoid, but I don't buy dive gears off the internet, especially used gears.

Joe Diver America has a build your own package starting at 367.00 for bcd, reg, octo, and guages. On the left side choose scuba gear packages. There are some very nice choices. This is new gear.

What was the site that was two guys (I think from Texas)? They used to promote their store on here all the time. I liked their site.

Thanks for the joediveramerica info.

Nothing wrong with used gear, but ou need to factor in the costs of servicing everything, plus shipping (if its not local), compared to the cost of new. Most people think thier used gear is worth WAY too much, and by the time you get it inspected / serviced you are close to the cost of new stuff anyways.

If you're not in a hurry, you can find some great deals on used gear. Just be ready to pounce when you see it, or someone else will snap it up.
