Hello Everyone

What if we could use our smart phones as dive computers? Our years of research chasing this idea have recently been concluded as a modular dive computing system: DivePhone. Basically it consists of;

- a housing for your smartphone
- an external module integrated to the housing that receives ambient dive related data and transmits it to the phone.
- and the software for your phone to function as an advanced dive computer.

DivePhone is currently working on the iPhone and Windows Mobile operated smart phones. Android support is expected in 2012 summer.

DivePhone is a dive computing system with various unique abilities like emergency sms feature or simultenaus display of multiple deco information from different algorithms. It is also much cheaper than the dive computers close to its capabilities.

DivePhone also is a potent technology because computation and display capabilities of it is limited only by smartphones' progression. We think that dive computing systems using smartphones can be a significant alternative to existing dive computers.

Interesting idea. Looks very bulky in the video. Are you looking to reduce the size in the future?

We have to keep it little bit large for it to be a universal housing for all kinds of palms and PDAs. In the future we plan to produce smaller housings for smaller phones.
 
Zero interest here. Most smartphones are inherently too unreliable for me to want to bet my life on one . . . If all someone wants is cheap, then maybe . . . Myself, I'll spend the bucks for a task-specific device if my life depends on it, not a bastardization of an advanced kiddie toy, as phones have become.

DivePhone software shuts down all the other functions of the smartphone before diving and restores them when closed. Thus you can't receive or make calls, connect to internet or surf on twitter while you are underwater. We know that would be distracting and dangerous. DivePhone is not designed to 'use the smartphone' while diving, but use its hardware capabilities to do the dive computing.

Shutting down of the phones' other functions and applications also increase their reliability since phones usually crash while processing them. DivePhone software is simple and refine enough to not to cause reboots.
 
The smartphones' as well as an average computer's software is over bloated with millions of features, thus very unreliable. Using the smartphone to calculate my tables - this is what I have been using for last few years, then just use a simple bottom timer.
 
Worse would be the risk of a flood. Just how much is a brand new Iphone? Much more than a basic computer/bottom timer. The cost of the housing and adapters is probably more than a bottom timer. Plus my Iphone battery sucks! No thanks, not for me.
 
I believe there are at least three companies working on this approach, you can wind up with a highly versatile dive computer, a compass, a still camera, a video camera, and who knows what else. I suspect that this is the wave of the future. Reliability is, of course, always a primary concern, but time will tell. I do remember hearing exactly the same issues with respect to dive computers when they arrived on the scene.
 
I think this looks very interesting.

Will it be available as a hoseless air integrated unit?
