But the fact that there is not even a consistanly stable method to update the firmware is a problem that has not been resolved through other developers update process.
Absolutely true, updating the firmware is something that needs to be handled by us, not third parties. We always conceived of the Cobalt as being frequently updated. My feeling is that a standalone update method for Windows, like we have for the Mac, would be the best solution. Or even better, a method that didn't depend on a host OS to work.

Anyone had trouble updating the firmware to 1.17 on the cobalt computer. I just tried and the dive log program crashed in the middle of the update. Now the cobalt is dead. When I connect the USB, my computer does not recognize it. Gives me an "unknown device". Now I can't reinstall the firmware since the computer does not recognize the Cobalt. I'm stuck. Does anyone have any advice?

The first thing to try is the procedures here: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt Software
Check, of course, to make sure the cables are all secure. If the procedure on the Atomic site doesn't recover it (it depends on where in the update the program crashed) PM me with email and/ or phone, and I'll help you get it back up.

Ron, Thanks for your help. I've tried the procedures on the web site with no success. The problem I am having seems to be that my computer (win 7, 64-bit) no longer recognizes the Cobalt. I plug in the the Cobalt to the USB port and I get an "unkown device" that loads (seems that the Cobalt USB driver is not loading up). The Dive Log program doesn't recognized the device and thus I cannot perform a reinstall of the firmware. You can email me directly at blperez00@gmail.com if that would help.

Sent you an email with a list of things to do.

I did the update yesterday afternoon with no problems

A customer beta program of the download tools, desktop software could do great things for the quality perception here. not of the firmware itself, but of the install process. msomething is obviously getting past the internal testing process.

Many of us have multiple home PC's (and in my case a Windows XP, Windows 7 - 64B, MAC, iphone, ipad, android phone). OK, i am a gadget guy and willing to help on occasion.

I'd like to add my opinion on the dive log and firmware issue. After reading all the great review on the Cobalt as a DC I was set to get one. Being a network engineer and software developer in a past life I looked into the software next. After this thread and a few others I ended up getting a Galileo SOL. I HATE to get hardware from one vendor and software from another. Then at the first sign of trouble they just point fingers at each other. Even if Atomic doent develop are maintain the software they should support it. They would have gotten me to purchase a Cobalt.

Now I do like the idea od OS independant fireware updates. What about uploading dive loads to a webserver over the USB with internet provided by the host? Then a user could login to said site and download a log file in different formats for different log programs. Then you are no longer dependant on 3rd party for an application interface. Maybe over time the site is improved and becomes more feature rich. I would point you to look at Ham radio and something called QSL cards. They used to be hand writen and snail mailed. Now 95% are transmitted via qsl websites. One is www.eqsl.cc . Mose of the ham radio control and logging software automatically uploads to eqsl and then electronic qsl cards are sent out. Could the usb port on the Cobalt be used to gain internet access from its host? Then firmware and logs could be transmitted via internet.

Removing the battery fixed the "unknown USB device" problem whereby I was unable to get the Cobalt to connect to the computer. The firmware installed correctly and the Cobalt seems to be working correctly. Thanks again!
