Gordon, if you can keep your head while all those around you are losing theirs, then . . .you clearly don't understand the situation.

Holy cow, the horse is dead already. Now we are nitpicking the English language? I think there a quite a few people that need to go diving.

Much ado about nothing. In my experience when people start haggling over the dictionary meaning of words in someone's statement, the original intent of that statement has been left in the dust. I mean no offense, but those who were grievously offended by Ron's remark ought to choose their battles more wisely. Life is too full of real issues to deal with for anyone to waste effort trying to psychoanalyze and find wanting someone from an offhand remark they wrote in an internet forum. Seriously.

Man, thank you!

Let me put this all in perspective.

What would Hitler say if he read this thread?

My, my! That is a classic example of an ad hominem attack! Rather than talking about the issue, this kind of reply works towards derailing a discussion (generally by the one losing the debate) through a strategy of calling into question the character of the opponent (generally the one winning the debate).

Why have I focused on wording? Because that's how humans communicate--not by telepathy. You claim that "the original intent of that statement has been left in the dust." How would anyone know that, based on what was written? They wouldn't! That's all we have to go by, after all; words do matter. It happens that the words used in Ron's Rule #1 express a viewpoint that many disagree with. I don't think a single person said they were "grievously offended" by the message behind Ron's words, simply that they disagreed with his viewpoint, which is their right. There's no call to suggest that those who disagree are misguided fools choosing their battles unwisely, focusing on inconsequential issues, and squandering their effort. Doing so amounts to no more than an ad hominim attack.

Seriously. Ron's Rule #1 is questionable.

:eyes: .... Me thinks that we have too much time on our hands as perhaps many of us are waiting for our Spring and Summer dive trips ! :crazyeye: Add this to the fact that we are on the Cozumel forum and the combination of both factors can spin almost ANY topic out of control. :rofl3:

Ladies, we know that we can, and do accomplish whatever we set our minds to regardless of the rules that we have been subjected to in our past and our present. We also know it is our responsibility to instill this empowerment to not only to our daughters and granddaughters but to the men in our lives as well.

Baseline, as divers, it is everyone's responsibility to not only take care of ourselves, but to also be aware of the safety and welfare for ALL divers to the best of our ability. Now, Let's go Diving !!!

They aren't?

What's the whole industry that revolves around pepper spray that fits in a women's purse all about?

Men generally prefer to carry concealed handguns, because it is more macho, but it is the same idea, isn't it?

Why is there male vs male boxing and female vs female boxing but no male vs female boxing in the Olympics?

Scuba diving is hardly hand to hand combat. Not sure how this is applicable.[/QUOTE]

Get over it people, there is a difference between the sexes, if you want to pretend there isn't it doesn't make you chivalrous, it just makes you a liar.

I agree there are differences, but you seem to be trying to make the argument that men are automatically better at everything.

Nimoh - assumptions do nothing to change facts. If I 'seem' to be trying to make the argument that men are automatically better at everything, you're reading this in the wrong language or something. In fact everything you just wrote is completely wrong, slow down it's cold outside in MN, you've got plenty of time to go back and read 147 posts and get up to speed cause you're way off.

By-the-way, I don't know any men who carry pepper spray in their purses, but I do know women who conceal carry, and open carry. God Bless em!!!

I also don't know a single man or woman who open or conceal carries because its 'macho'. Everyone I know does so for protection and because it's a constitutional right. (at least for a little while longer...)

Linguistic analysis includes not only parsing the text, but more importantly understanding the external factors inplay at the time the statement was made. This involves understanding the contextual and temporal aspects affecting the OP at the time of the original post. Ron posted this shortly after the last tragic event in Coz. If you are not aware of the event last week, it is because the thread was moved, edited, closed and not discussed in the coz forum. I dove that day, bad viz, bad currents and a very risky place for a novice diver to be, extra caution was the mantra of the day. Bottom line, choose your dive partners carefully, don't dive beyond your experience level, follow all aspects of buddy diving concepts, etc.............
