XTX200 + HP Tanks

All three of us have XTX200 and XTX20 Octos with an environmentally sealed 1st stage. We recently bought our own Faber HP100 tanks. On our sixth dive my sons first stage released a small quick burst of air when the tank was opened. I opened and closed the valve purging the reg in between and still got the quick burst of air from the top of the stage, around the Apeks stamped rubber ring. My wife's did the same yesterday when I was soaking the regs at home yesterday. There are no other issues with the regs.

Is this normal with a really good HP fill, - around 3400psi?

3400 isn't a really good fill in these parts, that would be 4000

Was it just a quick burst and then stopped immediately? If it was, that is just the environmental seal, sealing itself. If it continues, then you have a problem, but if it is just during pressurization and goes away, you're fine. The balancing mechanism is slightly different for sealed regs because it has to pressurize the environmental chamber to the IP of the reg and if the seal breaks when the reg is depressurized, it has to seal it back so you'll get a bit of a puff of air until the silicone seals up.

That is not normal. Is there really a burst or just a sound? If its just a sound then that is just the hp valve sealing and the hydrostatic transmitter pushing up against the environmental diaphragm (rubber black membrane with embossed apex logo)· Is that diaphragm concave when the reg is depressurized or is it bulging? If it is still concave then no problem. Are there any bubbles coming from the diaphragm while underwater? If none then no problem. Most likely it just sounds as if air is puffing out but there is actually none.

It's a quick burst as soon as the tank is opened, no bubbles during the dive. I'll have to check how the environmental seal behaves.

it might not actually be a burst, it might just sound like one as the regulator is pressurizing, that would be normal.

Thanks, we have done about 120 dives on these regs and this only started when we got the new tanks, even then only after a few dives.

Never experienced anything like that over last 16yrs diving on Apeks.
Check the IP first.
Perhaps it is about time to service the reg!

do us a favor. Spray the whole first stage with simple green to soapy water, then take a video of you pressurizing the regulator on the tank. Make sure you're showing the environmental seal from an oblique angle so we can actually see what is going on.

My Hog BP2 was doing something similar but when I had a tank fill of at least 3800 psi. I sent it in for warranty and they replaced it. Something about the IP and a spring needing to be replaced. They didn't have the spring, so they replaced it.

unfortunately it's a completely different story since the BP2 is a piston and this is a diaphragm, could be somewhat related, but very different internal configurations. Video evidence will help further diagnosis
