I know, did scubas are the lung popping devil, but I was wondering if it would be safe to use one in like a 5 ft pool.

It only takes approximately 4 ft (ie. little under 4ft or over 4ft) for you to embolize and kill yourself should you take a breath at depth, hold it, & ascend.

That's one risk on your physiology. For more risks you will face, more info is needed.

What kind of apparatus is this?

In addition to what others have already stated, it also depends upon your air source. A typical, oil-filled compressor will deliver air that is unsafe to breathe. Very unsafe.

To paraphrase TMHeimer, what did you have in mind/

eeman0201, Not what you asked, but I'm curious as to your purpose of doing this--either in a 5' deep pool or elsewhere? It would seem snorkeling, diving down 5 feet to collect something, etc., would suffice.

I'm going to guess he wants to build something the kids can play with in the pool and he needs us to tell him it's ok so he can try to convince his wife.

eeman, no. Just by the fact you're asking the question means you don't know enough to stay safe while breathing compressed air underwater.

In theory, yes. I know someone who does really serious cave diving on a homemade rebreather. So yes, if you really know what you are doing and have a lot of experience with how to produce and deliver safe breathing air, how to set up the regulators and all the other issues that will come up then you can do this safely. But if you are asking the question I have to think that for you the answer is no. (It would be for me too.)

I think there are commercially available systems that are designed to do this sort of thing safely, You might look into those.
