It happens ALOT on safety stops and on the surface waiting for a pickup. The shark will come straight up vertical at you{even with no fish} For bulls, it's a territorial thing and we are in their 'yard'. You have to back them down quickly so that all they will do is circle. In WPB it happens on the Princess Anne & the Ande all the time the sharks will go vertical on me.

You know freediving much better than me. When sharks come vertical on us, we have to get down to them fast and get them to break off. In freediving the buddy is critical. When sharks approach it's a team effort to get on them fast. Maybe just the event sequence & angle, but I didn't see another diver to help if he was breathe'd up.

Freedivers are on their own more or less, The buddy waits on the surface typically. the attack happened at a depth of probably 15 or 25 feet..

And I agree with you for scuba diving, there is not much we can do.. other than bluff and charge them and pray they break off.

The Ande Wreck.. I got a scary video of that.. solo spearing .. skip to 4;30 for the exciting part.

I have had two bad experiences with bullsharks there and I think i saw a giant GWS there too.

Question..what do you think would have happened had the diver not have a speargun?

My take. At best, a loss of limb. At worst, life! What would one do? And don't say a punch to the jaw....punching in water is like playing Slomo on the surface. While I was strapping my knife to my ankle last month in Coz, my DM said....nope. Not allowed:shocked:

Eyes and gills are their weak spots. So if it bit and didn't let go I'd go for one of those two areas.

But in reality, with no tool for protection... take it like a man and accept your fate. You're not going to win. They move so fast and teeth are so sharp they could leave you without limbs in a few seconds.

Always a crazy read... Shark Attack! | Gilliam

The knife wasn't to ward off a shark. It is to slice my buddy when sharks are in attack mode :)

There is quite a bit of evidence that sharks bite humans. I'm asking if you know of any instances of a shark eating a human.

This is my question too because I don't own a speargun and was hoping to hunt Lionfish with only a folding spear, and I am not sure what defense that would be, although better than none.
Also, that advice to go back down and face off the threat, " Mano a Sharko" would not help if his fellow sharks can come up behind you, and anyway, you can't last for long at 160 feet, (as in last video. ).
Would carrying a Spair air tank help to hit them with? I have dove with sharks around, and have not seen anything like this.

Yes there certainly is evidence they take off limbs and chunks and I have pictures of what looks like a whole person (in parts) cut from a tiger shark belly. Not sure if that kind of photograph would be welcomed on here. If they take off a calf and you bleed out or they bite off your head, does it really matter?

i would not be super worried about taking lionfish. If they are in a hard container and not readily visible you are taking away a big stimulus. IF a shark comes in hard on you and gets close enough to jab is with a spear, that is exactly what I would recommend. Dealing with sharks is a long discussion and it depends on the location, the situation, the type of shark, visibility, number of sharks, number of people and geographic variabilities are huge too. If people have been training the local sharks to take food from the end of a pole spear.. well that is a whole nother issue.

Great. And I'm scheduled for my first real oceanic deep and OW dives off of Jupiter next month. Sigh. Someone tell me it's still a good idea to do!
