Have you actually tried this wearing a nice, thick, snug-fitting hood suitable for cold water, like e.g. a 10mm Waterproof?
I don't even wear a wetsuit. Why would I wear a hood? :D :D :D You're diving in the wrong places!

Well, the OP's experience was from a drysuit class in 45F (7C} water. So I figured it was a point worth considering

I wear a 7mm hood. I was diving in 52-54F water today (24 ft) and 45F water last weekend (deeper). I have a hard time hearing my buddy's bubbles. Really all I hear are my own.

Something would have to be really loud for me to hear it.

I don't think I've ever heard anything uw--other than a close boat motor. Couldn't really even hear my own tank banger. Maybe my own bubbles a tiny bit...maybe.

If it were me I would have expressed my concern and told him that he should have been more clear in what he wanted.

Being that this is a class situation, it is your instructors responsibility to be very clear in his instructions. Especially diving lake Michigan. I used to be a life guard and I know those waters. .. glad one minute 6ft waves the next and notorious undertows.

Basically, I would say something.

Short wait and a quick look normal ascent. Chance to practice lost buddy drill. Great but possibly a bit unnerving. Anchor line to follow up to the surface is a bonus. Don't know the area but doubt it's much worse than here can be. Still I would talk to the instructor about why he buggered off.

I found the animated emoticons so I'm having a little fun, but please fill in missing info if I'm wrong or missed something

The class was a: :trainwreck:

What I learned: :explanation::explanation:
1. The 1 minute rule to surface
2. Get buoyant
3. If you are cold surface immediately

The OP probably shouldn't do this to the instructor :chair: :chair: or this :m16: or this
:argument:

However, a friendly :fishslap: with the PADI rules is in order :)

Did I miss anything?
