Arrival day was yesterday, October 3, 2017. We flew in on Delta Greensboro/Atlanta/Cancun. It was an early start, 5:35 am but everything went smoothly and we arrived in Cancun just a few minutes past 10 local time. Customs was a breeze (with more stations then Atlanta) although the button lite up when pressed so they inspected our bags. Only slowed us down briefly.

Through the doors and there was the gentleman from Carm holding a sign with our names (there is a video on the wesite that shows the path through the airport). Van arrived a few minutes later and we were loaded and on our way (69 dollars round trip plus an additional dollar for two bottles water). Just over an hour later we were at our condo in PA, Quinta Maya. It is on the water just a few units down the beach from the Omni. I can tell you the security at the gated community Puerto Aventuras takes their job seriously. Eric was a bit (ok a lot) anxious about mainland Mexico but even he feels secure here.

We arrived several hours ahead of check in so we dropped off the bags and headed out to get our bearings. Had our first meal at Papacitos in the village. I would give it a five. I had a cheese chili rellanos and Eric the shrimp tacos. The guacamole was disappointing without much flavor. Of course we are accustomed to Cozumel meals.

The condo itself is quite nice. Large and very well equiped, probably the best of any rental we have had. Kitchen stocked with enough dishes to supply a small army, pots and pans, dish soaps etc. Laundy room with large detergent and softner dispensers and a water cooler/heater with 5 gallon jugs. And more towels then I have at home. Will post some pics later.

That evening we walked to the grocery store Chedraui. Advertised as just outside the gated community it is actually a bit futher then that but not too bad. The store itself is fairly small in that only about half of it is groceries but we were able to find most of the things we needed. There is an ATM inside. There was a taxi waiting outside, just a wave of the arm brought one to us and it was a 90 peso ride home.

All in all not too bad a start to our trip. Going to a new place always has a learning curve so I thought I would post my successes and blunders.

Day 2

First full day. Started with beautiful blue sky but had several cloud bursts throughout the day. None lasted longer then 10 minutes. Note to self, put phone in dry case just in case we get caught out in one of the downpours.

Spent the day lounging by the pool or the ocean while Eric dropped off his gear at Dive Aventuras.

Dive Aventuras is just a short stroll down the beach from our condo. They do 4 dives a day; 9, 11, 1 and 2:30 and rent al 80’s and 100s. Air and nitrox. Small boat with shade. I am told max 6 divers but Eric was the sole diver on his afternoon trip. 59 minute dive time limited by gas. Dove the Island site. Max depth 68 feet patch reef. Water temp 84 degrees. Highlights were big green morey, 3 eagle rays and 2 seahorses. Eric agreed its not Cozumel but wasn’t half bad. Viz was only about 45 feet. Apparantly in rained 2 days solid befor we arrived and it may have effected viz.

Meanwhile I worked hard at holding down the beach...

Late afternoon we walked up to the car rental at the entrance to PA, Go Carritos beside the gas station and Taco Paco. Got a Volkswagon Crossfox stick shift with full insurance 1000 pesos a day. Paid more then the daily rate for a week rental but we were satisfied. Car is a bit worn and we had to put air in the spare but should do the job. We had originall planned to just get a taxi for the day but when we saw the car rental place we changed plans.

Headed to Coba tomorrow and hope to be there when it opens at 8 am then sightsee Tulum. Forecast is stormy but keeping my fingers crossed...

Tulum is pretty. Especially the temple and small pyramind overlooking the sea. Not huge but interesting and nice setting. Enjoy

Renting a car sounds like a good idea. I've never rented in Mexico, and in my "Mexico" mind PA, Tulum and Coba are so far apart as to be separate vacations (as I have visited them), but no doubt a car makes this whole region smaller. Looking at Google maps now, they are a lot closer than they feel when traveling by bus.

Once while staying in Cancun we took (by charter bus) a trip down to Tulum for the AM. Had lunch down there. Then stopped and snorkeled in XelHa on the way back. I liked Tulum. But Chichen Itza is more impressive but a full day trip. I found Chichen Itza well worth the trip but then I had not seen any of the other big American Indian cities so it was special to me. The snorkel at Xel Ha was nice also. LIke snorkeling in a giant rock garden.

Sounds like everything is working out so far. Looking forward to the entire chronicle.

My wife and I did Tulum-then-Xel Ha one of the days on our honeymoon. Tulum is far from the biggest or most impressive ruins on earth (or in the area, Chichen Itza being notably bigger)....but doing Tulum+Xel Ha was a fantastic way to spend the day. We want to go to Chichen Itza next time we're down there, though.

One question: What's the cost of diving through Dive Aventuras?

Thank you for the report and please continue.
I am going there next summer and taking five nieces/nephews for their first dive trip. (except one has been to Bonaire)
We will be using Dive Adventuras.

All information is helpful.

Having toured the Yucatan archeological sites extensively over the past three decades, to me, Coba offers the best, easily accessible, major Mayan site. For me, Chichen and Tulum, while significant, are also over-crowded, which takes away from some of the experience. Coba, being a little more off the beaten path, offers a much more pleasurable opportunity. I highly recommend retaining one of the guides available at the front gate, as well. Their knowledge really contributes to an appreciation of the Maya.

I've been to Tulum & Coba twice. I enjoyed the bike ride & the 120 steps up to the top of Coba Ruins. Also I enjoyed the cenote diving there, but never care about reef diving there.
