Gopro 6 vs Olympus TG 5

I wouldn't bother with the macro attachment for the GoPro. It doesn't do anything at all. GoPro and macro do not coincide.

I recently switched from a GoPro to the Olympus TG5. The Olympus is worlds better and can still shoot 4k video if desired. It's not even a close comparison. I use a Sola video light mounted directly to the camera. No tray (yet). I do plan on adding a strobe soon though once i have the coin. I love my setup, it's small and a ton better than a GP. Another thing to consider is the lack of zoom on a GP

I politely disagree that the macro attachment does nothing at all on a GoPro. It does make a noticeable difference, but definitely not to the extent of a dedicated camera rig with a macro lens. It allows the user to shoot a subject and focus on it at a much closer minimum distance than without which allows you to capture more detail when up close.

How about getting both? So you can take still picture & video the action with the GoPro at the same time. I put my GoPro on the HotShoe port on top of my Sea & Sea DX2G.

I guess, it’s the sign of the time, the more gadgets, the less chance you would miss the “lifetime” opportunity to get the dang manta in action. I almost whacked his head with my camera rig.

I was in Eilat a while ago and saw a rig that featured an Olympus E-M1 set up for macro, with a Fuji compact set up for wide angle on top of it, and a GoPro on top of that

I'm pretty sure the shot of eight divers trying to compete for the shot was more interesting than the manta. I sometimes just take pictures of the picture takers when I'm traveling. I'll spend hours at a popular spot and watch a parade of tour busses unload their tourists, who walk up, take a picture and say "got it" and head back to the bus. Meanwhile the lighting changes throughout that time and at some point there is a nice shot but memories are better anyway because they have the filter of whatever truth I choose to remember about the place. Snapshots are just that and I can find them on the internet. YMMV

the Macro lens (only the +15 macro mini) offers minimal improvement for small subjects at best. that is not really macro, it just allows you to focus on smaller things.

It allows you to focus on closer things. They may also be smaller. The naked GoPro (and I think most of its clones) can focus only as close as about a foot, which is not close enough for many critters or objects; the wide-angle lens makes everything seem even smaller. The depth of field allows things closer than a foot to be sort of OK, but not really razor sharp. Close-up lenses, like the +15 MarcoMate, allow you to focus at 3 inches, which is beginning to be useful for small stuff! It does not give 1:1 magnification, so by some strict definitions, it is still not "macro."

I have seen amazing videos of the flip pro 6 that has the macromini lens included from Backscatter. The details that the lens can pick up is pretty awesome. I wanted to pick one up on there website but the kit is insanely expensive and then If I decided I wanted to return it, its store credit or exchange only. And they have the competetion cornered, there is nothing else like it out there. Or at least I havent found it.
