I bet somewhere, somewhen, PADI knowingly issued such a card when a parent didn't want their minor child's image documented with their name.

Hmm, that could actually be a very effective way of ensuring that their parent is present and actually giving consent for them to dive... "If Poppa ain't here, Daisy ain't divin'..." :p

I got my picture taken by the instructor with his Samsung phone in front of the building that we dove out of. I don’t think cameras or physical print photos are needed anymore.

Same here. That photo showed up on my card about a week later.

I am filling out my forms and now I need to take the picture and it's telling me that I need to take a pic of my head and shoulders and to be approximately 1 3/4" by 2 1/4". So I took a picture and used Gimp to crop out a rectangle that size, and that aspect ratio just looks odd and it shows more like my head and chest and doesn't even show my full shoulders since I have broad shoulders.

How exactly is this picture supposed to be taken and cropped? I tried googling but did not have much luck.

I know I'm a bit late to this conversation, but just wanted to add my two cents: the shop I used to work for only used paper PICs (the form your GC shop gave you to mail to PADI) so I'm very familiar with the wording on them and how official and demanding it sounds. You have nothing to worry about. I've sent in many many of those with photos I've taken of my students. Despite what the restrictions state on the form, PADI will (within reason) print on your cert card whatever photo you send them (i.e. with shoulders, without shoulders, with a hat and/or sunglasses or without.)

I've always thought a plain passport photo was kind of boring; I make a point of taking my students' photos at the beach before (for the girls) or after (for the guys) a dive, so they're dressed properly (i.e. in a wetsuit.) Usually able to get a nice wave breaking on the shore in the background.

My AOW card from 1988 has a picture of my cat on it. The name of the instructor on it was someone who I had, at that time never met, since he was in pretrial confinement. His wife, who did the classroom session was a great teacher and worked as an assistant principal with 2 doctorates in a nearby high school.

I dropped mine in the mail on Tuesday and just had my wife take a passport style pictures using one of those apps as the guide. I didn't have a white background so it's just in my living room where the lighting was better. It will just be a boring picture on the card lol.

It would have been cool to have the picture taken after the dives that I got my OW and AOW cert on, like while on the boat. It would be cool to just have that memory stamped on the card. Had I known about all of this on the boat I would have done it then. I didn't even know there was a pic on there until I looked at the form I had to fill out.

Just your cat, or were you also in the picture? Ever have trouble getting fills with that?

Only my cat on the picture. Never had a problem getting fills, but 6 months later I also had rescue and Divemaster in addition to my DLRG Rettungstacher.

Less than a year later, I also had an 240 lpm JP Sauer (who bought out Poppe) compressor with a 7.5kw 380V star/delta motor, auto dumps, auto cutoff and auto fill from a small (2x50L) cascade untill the compressor was pumping higher. Sounds great, worked great, and I got it for less than $0.20 a kilo used from the regional electrical provider who had used it for 20 years in order to blow out the sparking sooner on 220KV high voltage air switches.

That was the start of the end, since then I've been diving ever weekend and buying enough divegear to stay broke.
Diving, like opiates, good food n sex is addictive, and the dealers, XXX Scuba Shops, don't warn you in advance - they behave like small time dealers who hand out drugs on school playgrounds for free untill the kids are hooked and have to pay.

Well they must have accepted my picture because I got an email about a temporary e-card while they process my physical one, for both my OW and AOW certifications I sent in.

But man, the PADI app is a joke. They clearly don't care about technology at PADI. My e-card isn't even showing up in the app and apparently based on reviews, it doesn't work for most people. As a software developer myself who has had multiple apps in the app store, it's clear how little they care about technology. Which is a shame because they could do pretty good things with a PADI app.

Not sure if you are aware - an ecard is an added purchase after the physical card is issued. The app does not automatically show all of your certs - only the ones you have paid for the extra ecard. If there was a temp one, it may have been deleted once your plastic was issued.
