When I bought my Z2 regs + octo, a large online warehouse vendor here in the US sold me the 1st + 2nd stage for a "special offer" price of $283 ($440 MAP?) and $130 something for the octo. When it came time to buy one for my wife, I went to my LDS and initially "best" he could do was a 10% public safety discount. After I showed him the receipt for the set I bought for myself, he agreed, to match the price for her reg...but he acted all bent out of shape about it. That's after we had already purchased close to $1000 worth of stuff between thr two of us.

He is bent out of shape because he is hurting. The $283 you paid through the online warehouse is few dollars more than wholesale price. I wouldn't have done it. $1000 isn't a big deal to talk about.

But don't forget, atomic z2 MAP was NOT always at today's $440. In 2015, the map is probably at high $300s. But $283 was still a good price.

$1000 may not be a big deal to talk about to you, but to some it is; everyone has their own financial constraints. Now granted, that was a few years back when I was still new to scuba and was still going through the sticker-shock of the hobby. Since then we're easily several thousand bucks in between my wife and I (DC, mask, fins, wetsuit, classes, lights, tanks + fills).

That being said and we're getting a bit off topic, I work hard for my money just as I assume, you do for yours, as does the LDS and I don't see a reason not to spend my money in a way that maximized my return on investment. I still buy stuff from my LDS when the prices are comparable, but if I can save 25%+ by buying elsewhere, I will do it 9 out of 10 times...which leaves me with more money to drop at my LDS for the Teric + transmitter I just ordered.

~cheers

However, that was almost 4 years ago and when I was looking to get another reg, I reached out to both online vendor and my LDS and both were reluctant to move the price more than the military or public safety discounts (10%). My backup reg will probably end up being a Deep6.

All you can do is ask....thats free.
Just curious which site it was you got that huge discount from. That is the set that I'm like 90% going to get.

A $1000 is a 5 month salary for the average Libyan, that's a lot of money relatively speaking. One has to take everything in context, it isn't a whole lot of money in the US and certainly not a whole lot of net profit for the LDS for you to start to think that you own it and expect him to just give you stuff away. The $283 maybe just few dollars more than the wholesale price in the US if that much. It certainly is less than the wholesale price in Europe even few years ago.

Even in the US, I would argue that $1000 is a significant amount... That's pretty much my monthly mortgage payment, so to me that's a significant figure.

I don't know wholesale prices of regs as I am not in the industry and am not privy to that information; what I knew is what one vendor was willing to sell it for vs another. Never did I feel that the shop owed me anything after spending money with them, nor would I consider paying lower markup price for something "getting it for free."

Knowing the wholesale price and the VAT cost, it will be impossible to get a 30 - 35% off the price of Atomic regulators after deducting the 20% VAT price. The margins between wholesale price and retail are very low to be able to give a 30 - 35% discount. In fact, if they did, the price will be less than wholesale price.

They may waive the 20% VAT if they are shipping the regulator to an outside EU address but that will require shipping it via courier who will supply the required customs documentation. The rules for VAT and various other requirements in the EU are more strict than in the US.

I was comparing the reg + octo bundle net of VAT plus a small discount (converted to USD or CAD) vs. the US/CAN MSRP.
It is definitely way cheaper.

I fly through UK often and I can easily go pick it up myself and get VAT refunded at the airport. Even with the shipping, the GBP price converted is still cheaper.

I can understand the lower price for EU brands. But I assumed US would get the lowest price for atomic products.
Funny, right now the CAD price is actually slightly lower than USD due to the depreciation of CAD over the years (prob the same reason that GBP price is lower these days).

I lived in London over the past several months while on a project and the prices there aren't any cheaper than the US for sure.
