This is a unique opinion, and one which I doubt you'll find many others sharing. Some cave systems have incredible currents... and that's just the beginning.

Yep, I didn't mean to generalize. I didn't mean that all cave diving is safer than all ocean diving. I meant that certain specific fresh water springs that have caves, low flow, well known great visibility, permanent guidelines, hard not-too-deep bottom, etc... make me feel safer than being in the open ocean. Perhaps I have a fear of open spaces or something!

I have friends who dive caves exclusively. They figure they're going to get eaten in the ocean.

I did 3 ocean dives in my open water training and they were HARROWING for me compared to caverns. I wasn't afraid of being eaten. I was terrified the entire time that I would be swept away into the abyss.

The Great Lakes solve that problem. Open water and no marine life to worry about other than slicing a glove on a mussel. :rofl3:

I love hard bottom. Abyss? Nope.

The Great Lakes tick all my boxes. :D

They gave no explaination other than that was their policy. I cancelled the rest of my dive package with that shop. I continually sounded my Dive Alert till the gas in my main tank ran out. Once I switched to my pony I regularly screamed for help. They told me they heard both the Dive Alert and my calls.

Did they hear the Dive Alert though? I've used it before, also emptying my main tank, and I could see the crew not even looking around for the source of the sound. Since then, it's developed a constant leak, so I'm considering it one of my junk purchases.

I've only done OWD and some fun dives in good conditions but ordered myself Mares all in one SMB. When doing fun dives in Thailand I never heard anyone saying that SMB is good to have and never saw SMB on other divers than the DM. After hearing stories about current taking divers far from boat I think I will have mine with me from now on.

Even if you don't know how to deploy it underwater or aren't so great at it, you can always deploy on the surface for greater visibility. I always carry one.

As I said in my last post "They told me they heard both the Dive Alert and my calls." They just ignored me till all the other divers finished their dive. Personally, I think the captain was p1$$ed because I have a solo card and ignoring me was his way of saying eff you. I was to be tagging along with one of the groups but they didn't splash till 15+ minutes after he put me in the water. He held them back according to one of the group. His description of the bottom wasn't even close to what I found under the boat.

Oh, I read what you wrote, which is why I qualified it with "though". I still have my doubts about its effectiveness. I'll grant that it's loud and convenient to use, but the Dive Alert itself hasn't been reliable for me: fills with water and it's near impossible to shake it out, and it eventually leaks air.

Never had a problem that way with mine. Maybe yours is defective. I've only needed it once and it was clearly heard at a quarter mile of more. I do test it on dives when I surface and never had what you describe.
