This would be like reading a novel while having sex. "I think you should get on top this time, honey. Would you hand me my phone?"

I think anyone who reads in either situation has serious problems. Even while hanging on the line for extended periods degassing I saw wonderful things. I read constantly - fiction and non-fiction, poetry, scholarly texts, etc., but all in print, no devices. I own a portable phone, but it's a phone. Nothing else. What the hell is wrong with people?

That is a subject you wouldn't have time to cover even decompressing from saturation dives!

In all seriousness, I prefer not even to bring a camera on dives unless there is a specific reason to.... without a camera I am far more in the moment. No video proof, but a far better personal experience.

Respectfully,

James

Edit to add: for the OP, if the device is to be brought down by support divers, why not just use a clear dry box, and have them start the movie then close it up and hand it off to you while it's still on the previews? Bluetooth works at close range for AI dive computers, so should work for headphones/earbuds.

Or, when theaters are again safe, go to a theater and watch a film about diving. Far less equipment needed.

It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how many people are actually doing it. Audio seems like it still might need some work. Or, maybe just having the phone on max volume will be sufficient to transmit audio through the water.

To each his own - do what you want on your dive; truly, no judgement here. Also, I am rec only and at this point don't foresee myself advancing into tech. But even at rec levels, I would be worried about such "effective" distractions like video/movies that could cause me to lose track of time and take me out of the reality of keeping a close eye on all things that are supporting my life.

Can't believe I'm the first to say this - usually I'm the one rolling my eyes at the killjoy posts.

The Watershot Splash works with iPhones to 10 meters. It is designed to let you use your phone as a camera but may also be suitable for other purposes.

Watershot Splash

They have housing for iPhones 7 and 8

iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus Kit

I don't know about headphones, but if you are able to watch movies underwater then you can probably enable the "closed captioning" to read the dialogue.

You sure that's legit? The website says they are 99 cents.

What the hell is wrong with people?

Definitely agree on this, people can't even accept the fact that others are bored on deco and want to catch up on their favorite show?
Blasphemy!

Just because you don't like something doesn't mean there is something wrong with those who do.

I am sure it is legit, I think maybe the models for older phones are sold out, perhaps that's what it says $0.99, see the Amazon listing below.

I actually bought one of these years ago and used it as a camera with an old iPhone 5 while on a trip to Bonaire, it worked okay but it was only good while snorkeling and I lost interest in it.

Does it have to be video? There are waterproof mp3 players that will work. What would be more appropriate that chilling with The Great Dive Podcast on a deco stop?
