Cancun Airport Transportation - Canada Transfers Official Site

Canada Transfers... I have found them to be very reliable. Book them online and there will be an agent outside the terminal with your name on a handheld sign. Ferry schedule has been limited to one each hour. Buy ticket at kiosk just in front and to the left of ferry terminal. Line can be long and not “socially distant”. Just buy one way ticket, no discount for return.

I thought they had started offering a slight discount for RT but it was very slight. In any event, the alternating-days would make a RT inadvisable as a change in your return by a day (or 3 or 5) would put you on another ferry company.

they really know how many passengers will show up but on the positive side is they seem to load all the passengers that line up.
I was horrified by what I saw a month or two ago. I got in line hours early to make sure I got a seat. They crammed in zillions of people, with some standing. There was zero social distancing (I was glad to be wearing both a mask and face shield). I decided this was unsafe and changed my return flight to Canada to fly out of Cozumel. It's unsafe from a pandemic perspective and it's unsafe should the ferry capsize and people find themselves without life jackets because the ferry was overloaded. And it's probably illegal, although that's usually winked at.

You don't need to set up anything in advance re: a driver at Cancun. As you exit the airport, (Terminal 3, I think...not sure...whatever Air Canada flies into), you'll see some booths offering private transit to various locations. I paid just under $1,000 pesos and had a driver in a nice, clean, new vehicle within minutes of exiting the terminal building who drove me at warp speed to Playa del Carmen. I don't think I have ever had such a quick trip!

Even before the alternate days buying RT tickets are inadvisable. As sometimes the Mexico Waterjet (or whatever their name is now) will reserve an entire ferry run for cruise ship passengers. I spent an extra hour at the dock because of that.
