Why?I received several calls, a few suggesting I take it down which I ultimately did.
Hard to tell in the video, is there a rainbow in the water or along the rocks? I've seen some phenomena with smooth water in rough seas that were not oil related.
Deep down I'm sorry that the wreck was removed. New wrecks are hard to come by.
Mostly so the general public stays off the icy breakwall. Why?
In a neighboring underwater preserve they have a tug that was sunk as an artificial reef
Yes I've dove on the Selvick, Moore, and HB Smith (rov) when I was up there last. Liked everyone of them though only the Moore was the best natural wreck up there.
The Jenny Lynn in Duncan Bay foundered in 2011 (heck of a story) and a bunch of heavy fuel oil and diesel came out of her. Shes still at the bottom of the bay intact because they gave up on salvaging her. The Barbara Lynn was on the bottom for 20 years when we attempted to salvage her and she still had a couple hundred gallons of diesel in her.
Any chance of removing that fuel? It'll come out eventually.
The HB Smith has a pretty cool story too and its last harbor was Marquette. I didn't think Ken or Jerry released the numbers on that one though I do know a few others who have visited and filmed it. Do you have any footage?
I've not done much diving downstate so I'm not familiar with those wrecks. Never got past the Straights.
We got fined by the EPA when the fuel tank busted. About 300 gallons broke free. An idea was to drain it into a lift bag, but it didnt work.
I was with Crossman and Ken on the Smith. The ROV footage isnt all that good, but I have 8 hours of it if you're interested.
Many Lake Superior divers are not happy with the zebras in the lower lakes. So prepare yourself for that when you get down here. But late spring will bring visibility that can surpass the tropics...
