Hello all,

I have a question regarding the use of a normal scuba 1st stage and 2nd stage but with a 20 foot hookah hose. I know that when used with a floating compressor such as a Brownie's Third Lung you need a special hookah second stage to deal with the 30-50 psi range of pressure supplied by the compressor. However what I would like to know is if you use a standard 12L/80 cc foot aluminium cylinder and and your 1st stage supplies 110/120 range in psi can you use a normal second stage at the other end of the hookah hose despite the length? Thanks for your help in advance.

The issue should be in the tuning. You shouldn't need any special gear. A normal first stage will deliver air to the LP hose at about 10 bar and 1000 liters per min.... so at limited depth the first stage should be able to do its job. The IP drop when you inhale, however, may be more on a hookah system than it would be in a normal scuba set up. So just thinking out loud you may want to use a 2nd stage that has an adjustable cracking adjustment in order to allow the user to compensate for that.

Otherwise I wouldn't expect anything particularly special about the pressure differential over 20ft that would cause a problem.

R..

Hi Nick, well on the issue of regulators for hookah diving something very revolutionary happened today. That is an electronic regulator (mouth part). I came up with the idea (inventor) but when contacted Brownies to mkt it they said they were already working on it and they were. Inventor John Colburn was a few months ahead of me and Brownies acquired his invention that was called Xporkle(just prototype) and as of a few hours ago it is now on the market as a KickStarter NEMO by BLU3 | The world's smallest dive system The performance figures of final version are quite amazing.

It uses 4 std lithium flashlight rechargeable batteries a tad bigger than AA and you can dive to 10 feet for an hour. I had a few contributions to the project. The whole thing with regulator and hoses is 10 pounds and fits in knapsack. I do wilderness river diving and perfect for me, bot a dual pack(2) for $679 or about $340 each on Kickstarter today. Size and weight wise even better than the one was working on, so just bought theirs. Not sure if their new electronic regulator is of value to you and your question, but newsworthy. And how the compressor works is very trick too, so it can run an hour on 4 tiny batteries. You can dive all day with a pocket full of batteries.

Also being electric, no fumes and very quiet. The pump is submerged so as to provide cool air, quiet it and increase performance too. The pump is totally new design.

Question, those Bu3 Nemo air hoses, I need a replacement. Nemo does not list them as a "replacement part" Can I maybe just order some other "retractable" hose from China? Or one of those retractable type garden hoses. System pressure does not exceed 14 psi. Shallow water diving.

Have you contacted BLU3 to ask them?
